The JWST PEARLS View of the El Gordo Galaxy Cluster and of the Structure It Magnifies

A surprising abundance of massive quiescent galaxies at 3 < z < 5 in the first data from JWST CEERS

Summary: We present a sample of 10 massive quiescent galaxies at z > 3, identified using JWST data, three of which are at 4 < z < 5, providing the best evidence to date for quiescent galaxies significantly before z = 4. These extreme galaxies have stellar masses in the range log(10)(M-*/M-circle dot) = 10.1-11.1, having formed most of their mass around z ≈ 10, with two objects suggesting they reached high stellar masses by z ≥ 8. Our results indicate that previous studies have underestimated the number of quiescent galaxies at 3 < z < 4 due to a lack of deep imaging data. This finding highlights the need for wider-area JWST surveys to obtain larger samples and more accurate number densities, as well as the opportunity to search for quiescent galaxies at z > 5. These galaxies are potential targets for JWST NIRSpec spectroscopy, which will provide deeper insights into the formation of massive galaxies and the quenching of star formation in the early universe.

An Atlas of Color-selected Quiescent Galaxies at z > 3 in Public JWST Fields

Summary: We conducted a systematic search in 11 JWST fields and identified candidate quiescent galaxies in the distant universe. By combining JWST and Hubble Space Telescope data, we selected a sample of about 80 candidate quiescent galaxies at 3 < z < 5 using two different methods. The comoving number densities of massive quiescent galaxies are consistent with previous estimates, but there are significant field-to-field variations.

Summary: The selection of the first galaxies at z > 7-10 from JWST surveys is challenging due to the presence of z < 6 contaminants that have similar photometry. These contaminants include dust-obscured galaxies at 3 < z < 6, which are difficult to observe. JWST's PEARLS: A new lens model for ACT-CL J0102-4915, El Gordo, and the first red supergiant star at cosmological distances discovered by JWST

Possible Ongoing Merger Discovered by Photometry and Spectroscopy in the Field of the Galaxy Cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0

Summary: We present a detailed study of the Planck-selected binary galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0 (G165; z = 0.348). By generating a multiband photometric catalog and incorporating new spectroscopy and imaging data, we analyze the properties, members, and mass of the galaxy cluster. The results indicate that the relative velocity between the cluster components is small, with the brightest cluster galaxy showing an offset in velocity from the systemic mean value, and head-tail radio galaxies and a large red galaxy are discovered.

Head-to-Toe Measurement of El Gordo: Improved Analysis of the Galaxy Cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915 with New Wide-field Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Data

Summary: We present an improved weak-lensing study of the high-z merging galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915 (El Gordo) based on new wide-field Hubble Space Telescope imaging data. The study confirmed the binary mass structure of the cluster and obtained mass estimates of the subclusters. The updated mass measurement is consistent with the current ACDM cosmology and provides a more direct measurement without extrapolation.

ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey: An ALMA Galaxy Signposting a MUSE Galaxy Group at z=4.3 Behind El Gordo
