Spin-down by dynamo action in simulated radiative stellar layers

Ludovic Petitdemange et al.

Summary: The evolution of stars is influenced by internal rotation dynamics, but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. Magnetic fields may play a role in transporting angular momentum and chemical elements, but the origin of magnetism in radiative stellar layers is unclear. Through numerical simulations, we identified a subcritical transition from laminar flow to turbulence caused by a magnetic dynamo. This mechanism could produce strong magnetic fields inside radiative stars that are not observable on their surface.

Strong magnetic fields detected in the cores of 11 red giant stars using gravity-mode period spacings

S. Deheuvels et al.

Summary: Despite the lack of knowledge about magnetic fields in stellar interiors, recent seismic detection has provided measurements and information on the strength and topology of magnetic fields in the cores of red giant stars. A study on hydrogen-shell burning giants with deviations from expected gravity mode period spacing and lower measured period spacing suggests that these anomalies can be explained by strong magnetic fields in the cores of these stars. Lower limits on core field strengths ranging from 40 to 610 kG have been estimated for 11 Kepler red giants showing these anomalies.

Linking the interiors and surfaces of magnetic stars

Jim Fuller et al.

Summary: Strong magnetic fields are common in upper main sequence stars and white dwarfs and can cause photometric modulations. We computed magnetically perturbed stellar structures of young stars and found that the expected surface flux perturbations are smaller than the gas pressure in the star's interior. The observed flux variations in magnetic stars are likely due to changes in the emergent spectrum rather than changes in the bolometric flux.

Evolution of random initial magnetic fields in stably stratified and barotropic stars

Laura Becerra et al.

Summary: This article investigates the equilibrium configuration of magnetic fields inside stars through 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations. It finds that in stably stratified stars, initially random magnetic fields evolve to a stable equilibrium, but the nature of this equilibrium depends on the dissipation mechanisms considered, potentially leading to asymmetric magnetic fields.

Rotation in stellar interiors: General formulation and an asteroseismic-calibrated transport by the Tayler instability

P. Eggenberger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the magnetic Tayler instability on the angular momentum transport in stars, and tests different versions of the Tayler-Spruit dynamo by comparing them with asteroseismic measurements. It is found that the original TS dynamo provides insufficient coupling in certain cases, but a calibrated version can better reproduce the observed rotation rates of stars.

Magnetic signatures on mixed-mode frequencies II. Period spacings as a probe of the internal magnetism of red giants

L. Bugnet

Summary: In this study, we investigate the effect of magnetic fields on the internal dynamics of evolved stars using asteroseismic data. We propose a new method to account for magnetic signatures in the estimation of period spacings. Our results show that the presence of magnetic fields leads to biased estimates of period spacings and careful analysis of multiple estimates and frequency patterns may result in the first detection of internal magnetic fields in red giants.

Probing the internal magnetism of stars using asymptotic magneto-asteroseismology

S. Mathis et al.

Summary: Our knowledge of stellar dynamics has significantly improved with the advent of high-quality photometric observations from space-based asteroseismology and ground-based high-precision spectropolarimetry. However, new methods are needed to probe the deep magnetic fields in stars. We aim to provide seismic diagnoses that allow us to investigate the internal magnetism of stars, focusing on low-frequency gravity modes and high-frequency acoustic modes.

Probing the interior physics of stars through asteroseismology

C. Aerts

Summary: High-precision brightness measurements collected over years using telescopes in space have enabled astronomers to study the physics of stellar interiors through nonradial oscillations. The field of asteroseismology has provided new insights into how stars rotate and evolve chemically. Data-driven space asteroseismology has significantly improved computer models of star evolution, which are crucial for various research fields in space science and have potential applications in the search for extraterrestrial life and studies of supernova progenitors.

Magnetic signatures on mixed-mode frequencies: I. An axisymmetric fossil field inside the core of red giants

L. Bugnet et al.

Summary: The research suggests that evolved solar-like stars may contain a significant magnetic field in their core, leading to asymmetries in mixed-mode frequency multiplets. The impact of the magnetic field on the interior of stars can be detected in seismic data, but only for small field amplitudes that do not affect the modes significantly.

Summary: This article discusses the Sun as a critical benchmark for the study of stellar structure and evolution, the importance of understanding the internal properties of the Sun for solar atmospheric phenomena, and the sensitivity of solar models to underlying assumptions. It also explores the detailed information about the solar interior obtained through helioseismic investigations and the detection of solar neutrinos.

Surface Rotation and Photometric Activity for Kepler Targets. II. G and F Main-sequence Stars and Cool Subgiant Stars

A. R. G. Santos et al.

Summary: The study analyzed Kepler data of 132,921 main-sequence F and G stars and late subgiant stars, identifying rotation-period candidates and selecting reliable rotation periods using a machine-learning algorithm. The research also found that hotter stars generally rotate faster and that the photometric activity of main-sequence G stars varies with increasing effective temperature.
