Seismic modelling of a very young SPB star - KIC 8264293

Wojciech Szewczuk et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a thorough seismic analysis of MC 8264293, a fast-rotating B-type pulsator observed by the Kepler satellite. By fitting the period spacing and considering the position of the star in the HR diagram, we constrained the internal structure and physical parameters of the star. We found that the star is very young and has not yet left the zero-age main sequence. The star's photometric variability is mainly due to its pulsations in high-order g modes, as well as the fluctuation in its circumstellar disc.

Photometric detection of internal gravity waves in upper main-sequence stars: III. Comparison of amplitude spectrum fitting and Gaussian process regression using CELERITE2

Dominic M. Bowman et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that massive stars commonly exhibit stochastic low-frequency variability, which is believed to be caused by internal gravity waves or dynamic turbulence. This study aims to compare the properties of this variability and confirm its correlation with a star's location in the HR diagram using different statistical methods. The results suggest that Gaussian process regression is an efficient and novel methodology for characterizing stochastic low-frequency variability in massive stars.

Inverse tides in pulsating binary stars

Jim Fuller

Summary: In close binary star systems, self-excited pulsating stars can experience an 'inverse' tidal process where tidal interactions with unstable pulsation modes transfer energy in the opposite direction, causing the stellar spins to move away from synchronicity and potentially increasing eccentricity and spin-orbit misalignment. This phenomenon is most likely to occur in main-sequence gravity mode pulsators with orbital periods of a few days.

Variability of newly identified B-type stars observed by Kepler

Wojciech Szewczuk et al.

Summary: Recent re-determination of stellar atmospheric parameters during the Kepler mission has led to the discovery of more Kepler B-type stars. These stars exhibit pulsational variability, with high-order g modes being dominant and some low-order p/g modes also present. Patterns in the oscillation spectra associated with period spacings resulting from the asymptotic nature of the detected pulsational modes have been identified. The observed oscillation characteristics have been tentatively compared to predictions from linear non-adiabatic computations of stellar pulsations, with the effects of rotation on frequency values and mode instability considered for high-order g modes using the traditional approximation.

Internal mixing of rotating stars inferred from dipole gravity modes

May G. Pedersen et al.

Summary: Observations of 26 rotating stars with masses between 3 and 10 solar masses reveal a wide range of internal mixing levels, with models incorporating radially stratified mixing profiles showing the best asteroseismic performance. This study provides observational guidance for three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of transport processes in the deep interiors of stars, based on gravity modes probing the stars' deep interiors near the convective core. On the Origin of Stochastic, Low-Frequency Photometric Variability in Massive Stars

Matteo Cantiello et al.

Summary: High-precision photometric observations have revealed that stochastic low-frequency photometric variability in early-type stars is likely caused by subsurface convection. The presence of subsurface convection is closely related to the timescale and amplitude of this variability, as well as to the amplitude of macroturbulence. The explanation relying on convective core driven internal gravity waves encounters difficulties and seems unlikely to explain the observed trends.
