Influence of Semen Collection Frequency and Seasonal Variations on Fresh and Frozen Semen Quality in Thai Native Roosters

Maruay Pimprasert et al.

Summary: The frequency of semen collection and the season have a significant impact on the quality of rooster semen and its suitability for cryopreservation. This study found that semen collection frequency did not affect semen quality, but it was influenced by the season. Three times per week semen collection can be conducted without compromising semen quality in Thai native roosters. However, sperm concentration was negatively affected during the rainy season, while the highest sperm production occurred in the winter.

Genetic Comparisons of Body Weight, Average Daily Gain, and Breast Circumference between Slow-Growing Thai Native Chickens (Pradu Hang dum) Raised On-Site Farm and On-Station

Nitiporn Chaikuad et al.

Summary: The study aimed to improve growth performance of Thai native chickens on smallholder farms using a multiple trait animal model and selection index. The results showed higher body weight, average daily gain, and breast circumference in chickens raised on-station compared to on-site farms, with slightly higher heritability estimates. Selection criteria for breeding programs should include body weight at eight weeks of age, average daily gain from 4-8 weeks of age, and breast circumference at eight weeks of age.

Effect of organic selenium dietary supplementation on quality and fertility of cryopreserved chicken sperm

Napapach Chauychu-noo et al.

Summary: Supplementation of diets with 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 ppm selenium was found to improve the quality of fresh and frozen-thawed semen in roosters, increasing sperm viability and normal morphology while decreasing lipid peroxidation and enhancing fertility. Different selenium levels also impacted sperm concentration and quality parameters, with 0.6 ppm selenium recommended for optimal improvements in both fresh and frozen semen.

Summary: This study compared models for estimating the genetic parameters of fertility traits in Thai native chickens, finding that incorporating dominance and mate sire effects in the models improved accuracy of variance component estimates and reduced upward bias in heritability.

Genetic Effect and Growth Curve Parameter Estimation under Heat Stress in Slow-Growing Thai Native Chickens

Wuttigrai Boonkum et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the growth curve functions and estimate the impact of heat stress on genetic growth rates in Thai native and synthetic chickens. The Gompertz function was found to be the most suitable for evaluating genetic performance for heat tolerance and growth in slow-growing chickens. Growth rates were higher in Thai synthetic chickens compared to Thai native chickens, and males exhibited higher growth rates than females in both breeds.
