Effectiveness and safety of prenatal valacyclovir for congenital cytomegalovirus infection: systematic review and meta-analysis

F. D'Antonio et al.

Summary: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the safety and effectiveness of prenatal valacyclovir therapy in pregnancies with maternal CMV infection. The findings suggest that valacyclovir therapy can reduce the risk of congenital CMV infection. However, further research is needed to determine the impact of valacyclovir on the course of infection in the fetus and the risk of symptomatic fetal or neonatal infection.

Acute and Long-Term Effects of Static Stretching on Muscle-Tendon Unit Stiffness: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Kosuke Takeuchi et al.

Summary: Static stretching can increase joint range of motion, but its effects on muscle-tendon unit stiffness (MTS) vary between acute and long-term stretching. Acute static stretching significantly decreases MTS, while long-term stretching only shows a tendency of decrease. Gender and muscle type do not have significant effects on MTS, and there is a significant association between total stretching duration and MTS in acute static stretching.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on retinal abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). The results showed that patients had thinner retinal layers and larger optic cup volumes compared to controls. These retinal abnormalities may serve as state/trait markers in SSDs.

Summary: The study showed that 12 weeks of passive static stretching training can increase joint range of motion, improve maximum passive resistive torque, and reduce muscle stiffness. However, there were no significant effects on muscle architecture and maximum force-generating capacity.

Summary: Hip flexor stretching can affect performance parameters, but the duration of stretching plays a crucial role in determining the impact. Shorter durations of stretching may not have a substantial effect on performance.

Comparison of the Acute Effects of Hold-Relax and Static Stretching among Older Adults

Masatoshi Nakamura et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of static stretching and hold-relax stretching on ROM and muscle stiffness in older adults, showing that both methods increased ROM, with static stretching also decreasing muscle stiffness. Therefore, both hold-relax stretching and static stretching are recommended for older adults to improve ROM, with static stretching particularly helpful in reducing muscle stiffness.

Comparison Between High- and Low-Intensity Static Stretching Training Program on Active and Passive Properties of Plantar Flexors

Masatoshi Nakamura et al.

Summary: High-intensity static stretching (HI-SS) is more effective than low-intensity (LI-SS) for increasing range of motion and decreasing muscle stiffness of the plantar flexor muscles in young men after a 4-week training period. However, neither HI-SS nor LI-SS training led to changes in muscle strength, jump height, or muscle architecture. The control group did not show significant changes in any variables.

The acute effects of high-intensity jack-knife stretching on the flexibility of the hamstrings

Kosuke Takeuchi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the acute effects of high-intensity jack-knife stretching on hamstring flexibility. Results showed that the stretching significantly increased knee extension ROM and passive torque at end ROM at both intensities. However, muscle-tendon unit stiffness decreased significantly only in the PODmax intensity, suggesting the method is effective in reducing stiffness but may cause discomfort during stretching.

Acute and chronic effects of static stretching at 100% versus 120% intensity on flexibility

Taizan Fukaya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute and chronic effects of static stretching at different intensities on flexibility. The results showed that stretching at 120% intensity led to significantly greater acute improvements in ROM, peak passive torque, and stiffness compared to stretching at 100% intensity. Additionally, four weeks of stretching increased ROM and peak passive torque but did not decrease passive stiffness, regardless of the stretching intensity.
