A study on properties, static and dynamic elastic modulus of recycled concrete under the influence of modified fly ash

Hangwei Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of modified fly ash on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete, proposed a new equation relating the elastic modulus and compressive strength of concrete, and confirmed the importance of the quality and substitution rate of recycled fine aggregates in these effects.

Elaboration of bio-based building materials made from recycled olive core

Djamila Boukhelkhal et al.

Summary: The study focuses on utilizing olive core wastes as fine aggregate in self-compacting mortar, evaluating its physico-mechanical and thermal properties. Results show that increasing the content of olive core wastes decrease the density and compressive strength of SCM, but improve its thermal properties, making it possible to use olive waste core based SCM in nonstructural components with intriguing insulating properties.

The potential impact of size effects on compressive strength for the estimation of the Young's modulus of concrete

Chi-Cong Vu et al.

Summary: Concrete's elastic properties are independent of concrete mixtures and sample sizes, while the compressive strength is influenced by sample sizes. There is no direct proportionality between the linear property of elastic modulus and the non-linear property of compressive strength in concrete. Using empirical expressions from building codes to estimate elastic modulus from compressive strength can lead to incorrect designs.

Mechanical and durability properties of concrete subjected to early-age freeze-thaw cycles

Dongyun Liu et al.

Summary: Early-age frost damage negatively affects the performance of concrete and reduces the service life of buildings. Early freeze-thaw cycles result in poorer later-age performance, with later-age water-curing unable to completely restore the damage. The incorporation of fly ash reduces freeze-thaw resistance, while the presence of silica fumes has an adverse effect on freeze-thaw resistance in later ages.

Comparative study of dynamic and static Young's modulus of concrete containing basaltic aggregates

William de Araujo Thomaz et al.

Summary: The study compared Young's moduli of 28-day concrete determined through destructive tests with results of nondestructive tests, finding that the source of coarse aggregate had the most significant impact. Dynamic moduli were higher than static moduli, with equations derived to predict static moduli from dynamic values. The proposed equations aim to enhance Brazilian standard test methods.
