Elucidating environmental factors and their combined effects on CKDu in Sri Lanka using zebrafish*

Summary: Chronic kidney disease with uncertain etiology (CKDu) in Sri Lanka has been a global health issue, and the toxic effects of environmental factors in local drinking water on CKDu risk were investigated in this study. The exposure to water hardness, fluoride, heavy metals, and microcystin-LR was found to affect renal development, induce kidney damage, and disrupt gut microbiota and critical metabolites related to renal functions in zebrafish. The transcriptomic analysis revealed the potential signaling pathways involved in kidney-related DEGs. Furthermore, the changed gut bacteria were significantly connected to the DEGs and metabolites, providing new insights for potential therapies and monitoring of CKDu.

Significance of Mg-hardness and fluoride in drinking water on chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology in Monaragala, Sri Lanka

Analysis of groundwater samples showed significant differences in the concentrations of certain ions between CKDu-prevalent locations and control locations. Polystyrene Nanoplastics Toxicity to Zebrafish: Dysregulation of the Brain -Intestine-Microbiota Axis

The aim is to provide a comprehensive reference of L. fermentum strains that induce antioxidant effects and promote health, with potential broad applicability for disease control.
