Polyester microplastic fibers induce mitochondrial damage, apoptosis and oxidative stress in Daphnia carinata, accompanied by changes in apoptotic and ferroptosis pathway

Polyethylene microplastics trigger cell apoptosis and inflammation via inducing oxidative stress and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in carp gills

Summary: Microplastics cause damage to aquatic organisms, particularly the gills which are among the first tissues to be affected. This study found that polyethylene microplastics induce inflammation, vascular remodeling, mucus cell proliferation, oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, and inflammatory immune responses in the gills. These findings provide a new target for preventing toxin-induced gill injury from polyethylene microplastics.

Effects of microfiber exposure on medaka (Oryzias latipes): Oxidative stress, cell damage, and mortality

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of microfiber exposure on medaka fish. The results showed that fish survival decreased with increasing concentrations of microfiber. The expression levels of antioxidant enzymes increased in microfiber-exposed groups. In addition, microfiber exposure led to oxidative stress, apoptosis, and DNA damage.

Silicone nanomicelle dyeing method on polyester fibre: Comparative evaluation of chemical properties, fastness properties, and DFT

Summary: Disperse Red 177(9a), Disperse Red 343(9b), Disperse Blue 165(9c), Disperse Blue 165.1(9d), Disperse Blue 366 (9e), and Disperse Blue 148(9f) were studied in a solvent. The use of 9 (a-f) azo disperse dyes on polyester fabric, along with traditional and silicone nanomicelle techniques, resulted in equal washing, light, and rubbing fastness. The reduction in particle size of azo dyes through nanoemulsions allowed for direct transportation into the fiber core, eliminating the need for auxiliary dyes.

The persistent impacts of polyester microfibers on soil bio-physical properties following thermal treatment

Summary: This study investigated the effects of thermal treatment on soil properties, enzymatic activities, and microbial communities in polyester-microfibers contaminated soils. Results showed that polyester microfibers influenced soil physical properties and microbial communities regardless of thermal treatment, with even dose-effects observed following thermal treatment. The findings may guide the development of viable methods for remediating soils contaminated with microplastics.

Summary: The addition of polyester microfiber (PMF) increased the activities of soil cellulase and laccase, while natural organic matter (OM) significantly altered soil microbial communities and carbon-degraded enzyme activities. The interaction between PMF and OM increased the richness of bacterial communities in soils and on PMF, indicating potential implications for soil carbon dynamics and microbial communities affected by microplastics.
