Metal Accumulation and Ion Regulation in the Fish Hyphessobrycon luetkenii Living in a Site Chronically Contaminated by Copper: Insights from Translocation Experiments

Vinicius Dias Borges et al.

Summary: The study found that waterborne Cu concentration in the metal impacted site was 3.4 times higher than in the nonmetal impacted site, leading to elevated whole-body Cu levels in animals that had contact with the site. Additionally, both translocated groups showed increased Na,K-ATPase activity, while fish translocated from the nonmetal impacted site to the metal impacted site exhibited lower carbonic anhydrase activity. These results suggest that fish exposed to naturally elevated waterborne Cu were able to rapidly accumulate Cu but faced challenges in excreting it, with potential impacts on ammonia excretion related to carbonic anhydrase inhibition.

Reproductive Mode and Conflict Shape the Evolution of Male Attributes and Rate of Speciation in the Fish Family Poeciliidae

David N. Reznick et al.

Summary: Sexual conflict arises from differences in the ways males and females maximize fitness, which are influenced by investment in gametes, mate choice, and provision for offspring. Evolution of maternal provisioning in fish can lead to changes in when and how mates are chosen and is associated with the evolution of male traits linked to sexual selection. Contrary to predictions, the evolution of placentas and associated conflict does not accelerate speciation, with a more prominent role played by pre-copulatory reproductive isolation in driving speciation in this family.
