The resilience of the aquatic Isoetes cangae to terrestrial environment: Insights into molecular and ecophysiological adaptations

Late Quaternary Isoe?tes megaspores as a proxy for paleolimnological studies of the southeastern Amazonia

Summary: Isoetes communities in South America have high diversity, with two recently discovered species (I. serracarajensis and I. cangae) in the Carajás Mountain Range in southeastern Amazonia. Population dynamics and conservation status of these species were studied by identifying and quantifying their megaspores in sediment cores of upland lakes. The results show that drier climate conditions lead to the dehydration of swamps and ponds, restricting I. serracarajensis to eutrophicated lakes. On the other hand, the sensitive population of I. cangae declined due to eutrophication. Future climate and hydrological stress may further threaten the habitats and endangered populations of Isoetes.

Environmental characterization of an Amazonian lake for Isoetes cangae translocation

Summary: The Amazon endemic quillwort Isoetes cangae is a critically endangered submerged plant found exclusively at Lake Amendoim, Eastern Brazilian Amazon. The limnological characteristics and ecophysiological markers of Lake Tres Irmas-3 were evaluated to assess its suitability for the translocation and conservation of I. cangae. The findings suggest that Lake Tres Irmas-3 is a suitable candidate ecosystem for the conservation of I. cangae.

Evaporative water loss of 1.42 million global lakes

Summary: In recent decades, the evaporative water loss from global lake has significantly increased due to various factors. Using satellite observations and modeling tools, the study quantified the evaporation volume from 1.42 million global lakes from 1985 to 2018 and found that the long-term average lake evaporation is 1500 km(3) year(-1) with a growth rate of 3.12 km(3) year(-1). The increasing evaporation rate, decreasing lake ice coverage, and expanding lake surface area are the main contributors to this trend.

Ecophysiology of two endemic Amazon quillworts

Despite broad similarities between CAM in Isoetes and terrestrial angiosperms, several key differences are identified, including the recruitment of 'bacterial-type' PEPC and diverged circadian control of key CAM pathway genes in Isoetes.

Genome-wide identification of heat shock factors and heat shock proteins in response to UV and high intensity light stress in lettuce

Summary: Our genome-wide analysis identified 32 Hsfs and 22 small heat shock proteins (LsHsps) in lettuce, some of which do not have orthologs in Arabidopsis, poplar, and rice. Surprisingly, LsHsp70s have three times more members than Arabidopsis and two times more than rice, mostly due to genome tandem duplication. The transcriptional analysis revealed that genes from certain families were highly responsive to UV and high intensity light stress, providing candidate genes for breeding lettuce varieties resilient to artificial light in hydroponic systems.
