Growth-promoting and immunostimulatory effects of phytobiotics as dietary supplements for Pangasianodon hypophthalmus fingerlings

Rehab A. Abd-elaziz et al.

Summary: A 56-day feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of five herbal extracts on the growth, immune indices, and ammonia-N stress resistance of Pangasianodon hypophthalmus fingerlings. The results showed that feeding the fish with herbal extracts-based diets significantly improved growth, serum immune indices, and survival under ammonia stress. These findings suggest that using herbal extracts as feed supplements can enhance the growth and immunity of P. hypophthalmus fingerlings and increase their tolerance to external stressors.

The risk assessment of high-fat diet in farmed fish and its mitigation approaches: A review

Mohammed A. E. Naiel et al.

Summary: The application of high-fat diet (HFD) in fish farming can promote growth and productivity, but excessive intake leads to undesirable effects on fish performance, such as impaired growth, reduced feed efficiency, liver dysfunction, weakened immune function and decreased economic revenue. Various approaches, such as dietary manipulation and feed additives, have been used to mitigate the adverse impacts of HFD and improve fish growth and productivity.

Applications of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as an alternative to antibiotic use in aquaculture: a mini-review

Mohammed A. E. Naiel et al.

Summary: The use of antibiotics in food-producing animals and aquaculture is prohibited due to concerns about antibiotic-tolerant microorganisms, accumulation of antibiotic residues, and environmental pollution. Researchers have studied various alternatives such as probiotics, essential oils, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). AMPs are small peptides that can stimulate the immune system and have antimicrobial properties, making them a potential alternative to antibiotics in aquaculture.

The effects of paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa) leaf extract enriched diets on meat quality, sensory attributes, and the potential economic impact of broilers

Shimaa A. Sakr et al.

Summary: The study found that adding paulownia leaf extract to broiler diets significantly improved live body weight, carcass weight, and organ weights. It also reduced collagen and lipid content and increased protein levels in breast and thigh meat. Sensory attributes of the meat, such as flavor and tenderness, were improved with the supplementation. Furthermore, incorporating paulownia leaf extract increased total potential return and net profit, with the highest economic efficiency observed at a level of 0.5 g/kg.

Antibacterial activity and mechanism of plant flavonoids to gram-positive bacteria predicted from their lipophilicities

Ganjun Yuan et al.

Summary: This study established regression equations between physicochemical parameters of flavonoids and their antibacterial activities, indicating that lipophilicity is a key factor for their effectiveness against gram-positive bacteria. Results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations of most flavonoids against gram-positive bacteria could be roughly calculated from their lipophilicity, and suggested that the cell membrane is the main target of flavonoids in exerting antibacterial effects.
