Comparative evaluation on the effects of dietary docosahexaenoic acid on growth performance, fatty acid profile and lipid metabolism in two sizes of abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different levels of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on growth performance, fatty acid profile, and lipid metabolism in abalone were compared. The optimal dietary DHA content for large and small abalone was estimated to be 1.32% and 0.88%, respectively, based on weight gain rate (WGR). DHA supplementation increased digestive enzymes' activity, polyunsaturated fatty acids content, and n-3/n-6 PUFA ratio in abalone.

Dietary arachidonic acid affects the innate immunity, antioxidant capacities, intestinal health and microbiota in Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis)

Shuyan Miao et al.

Summary: The study showed that moderate supplementation of ARA enhanced the antioxidant capacity, immune response, and intestinal health of Chinese mitten crab. This suggests that moderate ARA supplementation could be beneficial for the commercial culture of crabs.

Arachidonic acid matters

Houguo Xu et al.

Summary: The importance of dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) in fish nutrition has been overlooked in the past, but recent studies have revealed its important functions in various physiological processes. These functions are influenced by factors such as dosage, species, development stage, sex, and feeding period.

Effects of dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) on immunity, growth and fatty acids of Apostichopus japonicus

Hongqing Qi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the appropriate dosage of exogenous ARA (0.49%-0.70%) can significantly enhance the immunity and fatty acid content of cultured A. japonicus. Specifically, dietary ARA between 0.49% and 1.09% improves the survival rate of sea cucumbers infected by Vibrio splendidus and upregulates the expression of immune-related genes. The results provide evidence that ARA can serve as a useful immune enhancer in A. japonicus aquaculture.

Lipid deposition in abalone Haliotis discus hannai affected by dietary lipid levels through AMPK α 2/PPAR α and JNK/mTOR/SREBP-1c pathway

Yanlin Guo et al.

Summary: The deposition of lipids in abalone is influenced by dietary lipid levels through the regulation of AMPK alpha 2/PPAR alpha and JNK/mTOR/SREBP-1c pathways. Higher and lower dietary lipid levels both have different effects on the expression of genes involved in fatty acid transport, lipolysis, and de-novo lipogenesis in the hepatopancreas and muscle of abalone.

Arachidonic acid modulated lipid metabolism and improved productive performance of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) juvenile under sub- to optimal temperatures

Bruno Cavalheiro Araujo et al.

Summary: The study found that different levels of dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) had effects on the growth, survival rate, and feed intake of striped bass exposed to different temperatures. Higher ARA levels in the diet promoted weight gain and survival, while lower levels may hinder growth. Additionally, temperature rise influenced lipid deposition in hepatocytes and modulated gene expression related to prostaglandin and fatty acid synthesis and breakdown.

Heat adhesion duration: A new high-throughput abalone thermal tolerance assessment method

Feng Yu et al.

Summary: The study developed a high-throughput evaluation method based on the adhesion capacity of abalone, showing positive correlations between HAD and survival time and ABT, with higher HAD individuals being more thermal tolerant. HAD values increased with acclimation temperature, and the southern population of Haliotis discus hannai exhibited stronger thermal tolerance compared to the northern population. Different abalone species from hybridization systems showed heterosis for thermal tolerance, confirming the efficacy of the method for molecular mechanism analyses and genetic selection.

Effects of dietary chromium yeast and astaxanthin on the growth performance, anti-oxidative capacity, and resistance to heat stress of abalone Haliotis discus hannai

Shuoli Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that dietary supplementation of chromium yeast (CrYst) significantly improved the growth performance of abalone, while astaxanthin (ASTA) had no significant effects on growth. Additionally, adding CrYst and/or ASTA enhanced the anti-oxidative capacity of abalone and reduced mortality during heat stress.

Transcriptome analysis reveals the molecular mechanisms of heterosis on thermal resistance in hybrid abalone

Qizhen Xiao et al.

Summary: The study confirmed heterosis in thermal tolerance of interspecific hybrid abalone (SD) through Arrhenius break temperatures (ABT) of cardiac performance. RNA-Sequencing revealed significantly diverged alternative splicing events in response to heat stress in three abalone species, with SD showing the highest number. The enrichment analysis of KEGG pathways suggested that genes involved in protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitophagy, and NF-kappa B signaling pathway may play a crucial role in the thermal resistance of hybrid abalone.
