Comparative analysis of genetic diversity and structure among four shell color strains of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas based on the mitochondrial COI gene and microsatellites

Yifei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effectiveness of shell color selection of Pacific oysters was evaluated using CIELAB colorimetric analysis and genetic analysis. The results showed significant differences in color parameters and genetic diversity among different shell color strains. Population simulation and pairwise FST analysis demonstrated high genetic differentiation among the four shell color strains.

Genetic diversity in a genetically improved line of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas with orange shell based on microsatellites and mtDNA data

Yulu Chen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the genetic diversity of the base population and improved orange-shell line using microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA sequences, finding that mass selection did not greatly impact the genetic diversity of the improved orange-shell line. This provides important insights into the utilization of shell color variants and future genetic improvement through selective breeding in aquaculture.

Growth, survival and gonad development of two new types of reciprocal triploid hybrids between Crassostrea gigas and C. angulata

Gaowei Jiang et al.

Summary: The development of two new types of triploid hybrids by inhibiting the polar body II has shown superior growth, survival, and gonad traits compared to diploid hybrids and purebred crosses. Triploid hybrids outperformed diploid hybrids in growth and survival across different culture environments, especially in summer, showing a positive yield advantage. The findings indicate that triploid hybrids have important application value for commercial oyster cultivation in northern China.

Examination of survival, physiological parameters and immune response in relation to the thermo-resistant heterosis of hybrid oysters derived from Crassostrea gigas and C. angulata

Gaowei Jiang et al.

Summary: Hybrid oysters between Crassostrea gigas and C. angulata show higher survival rate and stronger antioxidant capacity under high temperature, with broader aerobic metabolism temperature range and lower sensitivity. These findings contribute to our understanding of the physiological and immune mechanisms underlying thermoresistant heterosis and provide guidance for breeding thermoresistant oyster varieties.

Examination of survival, physiological parameters and immune response in relation to the thermo-resistant heterosis of hybrid oysters derived from Crassostrea gigas and C. angulata

Gaowei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that hybrids of two closely-related oyster species exhibited stronger thermal tolerance, broader temperature range of aerobic metabolism, and higher antioxidant capacity under acute heat stress compared to parental strains. These findings provide insights into the physiological and immune mechanisms underlying thermo-resistant heterosis, which can facilitate the breeding of thermo-resistant oyster varieties.

Genetic diversity of domestic brown trout stocks in Europe

Patrick Berrebi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genetic structure of 27 brown trout hatchery strains from Europe and North America, revealing the dominance of the North Atlantic lineage in European and American hatcheries, with the presence of local strains from domesticated regional wild fish. Most hatchery strains showed high to very high genetic polymorphism, likely due to genetic admixture counteracting losses of diversity from genetic drift and domestication. This study highlights the importance of identifying the genetic composition of hatchery stocks and the need for caution when stocking a common stock across a species' geographical range to avoid reducing genetic diversity and local adaptation.

Genetic variations among different generations and cultured populations of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Ghana: Application of microsatellite markers

Rhoda Lims Diyie et al.

Summary: Genetic diversity within and between different generations and cultured populations of Oreochromis niloticus in Ghana was assessed using microsatellite markers, revealing high genetic diversity among generations and moderate genetic structuring among cultured populations. Analysis of Molecular variance (AMOVA) showed more genetic divergence within populations than among populations, suggesting high mixing of stocks and sharing of different genetic backgrounds. The study demonstrates that microsatellite markers are a simple and efficient method for studying genetic diversity.

The GIFT that keeps on giving? A genetic audit of the Fijian Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) broodstock nucleus 20 years after introduction

Monal M. Lal et al.

Summary: Genetic analysis of the GIFT strain of Nile tilapia in Fiji revealed mild declines in genetic diversity, with some ponds showing signs of reduced effective population size and allelic diversity. Management practices and potential wild interbreeding were identified as factors influencing genetic structure and relatedness within the broodstock nucleus. Regular genetic monitoring and evaluation of performance are recommended to preserve valuable genetic diversity in the long term.

Estimates of recent and historical effective population size in turbot, seabream, seabass and carp selective breeding programmes

Maria Saura et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the current effective population size of commercial fish populations is small, posing a risk to their sustainability. Important drops in effective population size were detected about five to nine generations ago, likely due to domestication and selective breeding programmes in Europe. To ensure the sustainability of breeding programmes, it is crucial to broaden the genetic composition of base populations and implement measures to increase effective population size across farmed populations.
