Heating power effect on the thermal runaway characteristics of large-format lithium ion battery with Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)O2 as cathode

Zonghou Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that heating power has a more significant impact on the thermal runaway behavior of batteries under overheating conditions, with the peak heat release rate increasing with heating power. The severity of thermal runaway deteriorates rapidly with increasing heating power, and thermal runaway induced by higher heating power requires less input thermal energy.

Thermal Evaluation of an Inductive Power Transfer Pad for Charging Electric Vehicles

Seho Kim et al.

Summary: This article discusses the coupled electromagnetic-thermal simulations of inductive power transfer (IPT) pads using finite-element simulations. The derivation process of each electrical and thermal parameter required for the modeling is outlined. Simulation models are used to predict the power loss and temperature rise of an IPT pad under different ambient temperatures at steady state. Using these simulation methods, the power loss of an IPT pad operating at 50 degrees C ambient temperature is predicted. A 10-KW IPT system is set up in an environmental chamber to validate the predicted losses within the system.

The thermal runaway analysis on LiFePO4 electrical energy storage packs with different venting areas and void volumes

Peng Qin et al.

Summary: This study compares the thermal runaway behaviors of two different structures of lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs and proposes a new experimental method to investigate the characteristics of venting gas. The results indicate that a large venting area and sufficient void volume can ensure the safety of the battery pack. The venting gas is mainly composed of hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and the high concentrations of hydrogen and ethylene may be the main cause of fire explosions.

Investigating the relationship between heating temperature and thermal runaway of prismatic lithium-ion battery with LiFePO4 as cathode

Zhizuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of heating temperature on the thermal runaway (TR) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). It is found that TR occurs when the heating temperature exceeds 200 degrees Celsius, while only safety venting is observed at 175 degrees Celsius. As the heating temperature increases, the time interval between safety venting and TR decreases, and the temperature difference within the battery decreases. Additionally, the contribution of self-generated heat to trigger TR at different heating temperatures is identified.

Quantitative study on the thermal failure features of lithium iron phosphate batteries under varied heating powers

Zhizuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of experiments to investigate the thermal failure features of a fully charged lithium iron phosphate battery under different heating powers, revealing that the onset times of venting and thermal runaway decrease exponentially with increasing heating power. The heat generation of the batteries ranges from 10.38 kJ to 15.07 kJ, with maximum temperature and heat generation reaching the highest at 100 W. Further experiments at a continuous heating power of 20 W showed higher maximum temperature, mass loss, and heat generation compared to experiments with fixed heating quantities.
