Experimental evaluation of methanol steam reforming reactor heated by catalyst combustion for kW-class SOFC

Yang Hu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the distributed power generation of methanol steam reforming reactor combined with solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which offers significant economic advantages. A designed methanol steam reforming reactor integrates catalyst combustion, vaporization, and reforming to provide real-time fuel supply for kW-class SOFC without additional heating equipment. The optimal operating condition for the reforming reactor is identified as 523-553 K with a steam to carbon ratio (S/C) of 1.2. The reforming performance is influenced by methanol steam reforming (MSR), methanol decomposition (MD), and water-gas shift (WGS). The operating temperature is the primary factor affecting the conversion rate and composition of the reforming gas. The methanol conversion rate reaches up to 95.03% with a liquid space velocity (LHSV) affecting it inversely. The reforming reactor shows stability in supplying fuel for up to 1125 W SOFC.

Junjie Chen et al.

Summary: The present study focuses on the use of segmentally catalyzed steam-methanol reforming processes for hydrogen production in heat-integrated microchannel reactors. Computational simulations are performed to understand the fundamental phenomena involved in segmental catalysis and the autothermal operation. The benefits of segmental catalysis and heat phenomena are discussed, and the effects of wall thermal conductivity, flow velocity, and catalyst segment thickness are evaluated for designing heat-integrated reactors.

Methanol steam reforming reactor with fractal tree-shaped structures for photovoltaic/thermochemical hybrid power generation

Kai Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a fractal tree-shaped structure is introduced to improve the heat transfer and methanol conversion performance of the MSR reactor in a photovoltaic/thermochemical hybrid system. Experimental results show that the methanol conversion rate of the novel reactor is 26.5% higher than that of traditional reactors. By developing a 3D multiphysics model, the mechanism of this improvement is revealed. The fractal tree-shaped structure can improve the net solar-electric efficiency of the system and has energy storage capability.

Infrared thermography observations of crystallization fouling in a plate heat exchanger

Jure Berce et al.

Summary: This study investigated calcium carbonate crystallization fouling in a corrugated plate heat exchanger, and demonstrated the use of temperature and flow measurements, coupled with infrared thermography, to monitor fouling. The results showed that fouling caused channel blockage and flow obstructions, resulting in significant flow redistribution within the channel. This approach provides valuable insights for heat exchanger fouling studies and lays the foundation for future research on dynamic operation and computational models.

Enhancement of proton exchange membrane fuel cell net electric power and methanol-reforming performance by vein channel carved into the reactor plate

Shiang-Wuu Perng et al.

Summary: This article examines the fuel conversion ability of a small methanol steam reformer and the net electric power of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. By creating vein channels with varying widths and angles, the hydrogen yield, methanol conversion, and cell net electric power are evaluated at different temperatures. The findings show that adjusting the vein channel width and angle can enhance the fuel conversion and net electric power of the fuel cell.

Cr3+doped CaF2 transparent ceramic with effective broadband near-infrared emission

Changhai Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, Cr3+ doped CaF2(CaF2:Cr3+) precursor powders with a single valence of Cr3+ ion were synthesized by coprecipitation and CaF2:Cr3+ transparent ceramics were successfully prepared by vacuum hot-press sintering. The obtained ceramics exhibited high transmittance of 83% at 1200 nm and broadband near-infrared emission covering 680-980 nm with a FWHM of 130 nm. Moreover, the photoluminescence properties of the ceramics could be tuned by the concentration of Cr3+ ions.

Summary: This study proposes a method of designing a trapezoidal cavity in an auto-thermal methanol steam reforming micro-reactor (ATMSRM) to enhance its reforming temperature performance and hydrogen production. The numerical simulation model of ATMSRM is used to investigate the influence of different geometric sizes of the trapezoidal cavity. The results show that using a specific size of trapezoidal cavity can improve the reforming temperature performance and hydrogen production performance.
