Compression effect of metal foam on melting phase change in a shell-and-tube unit

Junfei Guo et al.

Summary: Metal foams can significantly improve the low effective thermal conductivity in phase change materials (PCMs) during melting and solidification processes, and compressing metal foams can further accelerate the energy storage rate. Results showed that compressed metal foam had better performance in improving phase change, while over-compressing metal foam should be avoided.

Finite Element Prediction of the Thermal Conductivity of GNP/Al Composites

X. S. Yang et al.

Summary: The effective thermal conductivity of graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)/Al composites is influenced by factors such as the shape, aspect ratio, configuration, and volume fraction of GNPs. The study found that composites with elliptic GNPs have the highest thermal conductivity, increasing the aspect ratio of GNPs leads to an increase in thermal conductivity, and composites with layered GNPs have the highest thermal conductivity among different configurations. Additionally, the thermal conductivity is sensitive to the volume fraction of GNPs, reaching a high value when the volume fraction of layered GNPs is 1.54%.

Minimal crystallographic descriptors of sorption properties in hypothetical MOFs and role in sequential learning optimization

Giovanni Trezza et al.

Summary: This article focuses on gas sorption within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for energy applications. The authors identify the essential crystallographic descriptors that influence the most important properties of MOFs for CO2 and H2O. They compare different sequential learning algorithms to optimize MOFs properties and clarify the role of these descriptors. Additionally, the authors propose a fast procedure to optimize specific energy in a closed sorption energy storage system using limited information.

Carbon nanotubes modified graphene hybrid Aerogel-based composite phase change materials for efficient thermal storage

Xin Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method of using self-assembled hybrid aerogel filled with carbon nanotubes and reduced graphene oxide nanosheets to improve the leakage behavior and heat transfer performance of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The resulting PEG/CGA composite phase change materials (c-PCMs) exhibit excellent thermal cycling stability and fast temperature rise rate. The introduction of carbon nanotubes not only enhances the adsorption capacity of the c-PCMs and alleviates the leakage of PEG, but also improves the heat transfer performance.

Orientation impact on structural integrity of a shell and tube latent heat thermal energy storage system

Soheila Riahi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the orientation on the melting process and the consequent thermal stresses in a lab-scale latent heat shell and tube system using a combination of transient computational fluid dynamics and finite element analyses. The results show that the thermal stress is lower in the horizontal orientation, especially under the condition of a 100 K initial temperature difference.

Analysis of phase change material thermal effects in large-scale proton-exchange membrane fuel cell based on open-source computational fluid dynamics

Iman Sarani et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of solid-liquid phase change materials (PCM) on the thermal management of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) using a novel 3D model based on open-source computational fluid dynamics software. The results show that PCM has a good cooling effect and can distribute temperature uniformly. Furthermore, the location of PCM and the boundary conditions have a significant impact on thermal performance, and PCM can store waste heat.

An overview on the use of additives and preparation procedure in phase change materials for thermal energy storage with a focus on long term applications

Alessandro Ribezzo et al.

Summary: This review provides an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the use of additives in Phase Change Materials (PCMs). It covers both experimental and theoretical perspectives. The traditional focus has been on short-term thermal energy storage applications, where additives have been extensively studied to enhance the unsatisfactory thermo-physical properties of PCMs. In this review, the emphasis is on the most important PCMs for long-term thermal energy storage. The role played by additives and additivation protocols on the thermo-physical and stability properties of PCMs is discussed. The use of additives in sugar alcohols, sodium acetate trihydrate, and emerging PCMs capable of solid-to-solid transitions is specifically highlighted. The review also identifies outstanding issues and aims to contribute to the understanding and application of less mature PCMs for long-term thermal energy storage.
