Xin Guo et al.

Summary: By using surface CeO2-decoration strategy, the surface electron distribution of bimetallic phosphides can be regulated to enhance their alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. CeO2-NiCoP exhibits significantly enhanced HER catalytic activity with low overpotentials of 84, 202 and 242 mV at the current densities of 10, 500 and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively, much lower than those of NiCoP counterparts.

Sulfur vacancies-induced Electron Bridge in Ni4Mo/Sv-ZnxCd1-xS regulates electron transfer for efficient H2-releasing photocatalysis

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: Through a defect-induced heterojunction constructing strategy, Ni4Mo alloys were grown on sulfur vacancies-rich ZCS via interfacial Ni-S covalent bonds, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate and stability. The unsaturated sulfur atoms induced by sulfur vacancies facilitate the anchoring of Ni-Mo nanoparticles and the formation of abundant Ni-S covalent bonds, enabling efficient photoelectron transfer and activation of water molecules. The optimized Ni4Mo/Sv-ZCS composite exhibits significantly higher PHE rate compared to Pt/ZCS and Ni4Mo/ZCS, indicating the potential of constructing sulfur vacancies and covalent bonds as an electron bridge to enhance PHE activity.

Visible-light enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation on Co3O4/MnO2 for the degradation of tetracycline: Cooperation of radical and non-radical mechanisms

Yingjun Wang et al.

Summary: In this research, a Co3O4/MnO2 heterojunction catalyst was successfully synthesized and used for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC) under visible irradiation. The cooperation between nonradical and radical resulted in significantly enhanced degradation efficiency. The optimized 10-Co3O4/MnO2 composite catalyst achieved 99.4% TC degradation efficiency within 60 minutes, with an apparent rate constant 6.77 and 45.10 times higher than the 10-CMO/PMS and 10-CMO/Vis systems, respectively. The PMS acted as an electron acceptor and accelerated TC degradation through nonradical pathways. After 5 cycles, the 10-CMO catalyst still removed 93.7% TC with minimal Co (0.06 mg/L) and Mn (0.20 mg/L) ion leakage.

Cationic vacancies and interface engineering on crystalline-amorphous gamma-phase Ni-Co oxyhydroxides achieve ultrahigh mass/areal/volumetric energy density flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor

Xue Ren et al.

Summary: Gamma-phase Ni-Co oxyhydroxides with cationic vacancy defects and crystalline-amorphous interfaces are synthesized successfully via electrochemical reconstruction to achieve an ultrahigh mass/areal/volumetric energy density, flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). The as-obtained gamma-phase Ni-Co oxyhydroxides display a high capacitance and excellent rate characteristics. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Ni-Co oxyhydroxides with cationic vacancies can increase the adsorption energy of H2O, which is beneficial for subsequent charge storage reactions.

Re nanoclusters anchored on nanosheet supports: Formation of Re-O-matrix bonding and evaluation as all-pH-range hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts

Shiyu Xu et al.

Summary: Water splitting-based generation of hydrogen as an energy carrier has the potential to address global energy shortage and climate change issues. However, the lack of inexpensive high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) hinders its practical implementation. In this study, Re nanoclusters uniformly distributed on nanosheet supports were synthesized through a hydrothermal method, resulting in a hybrid material with abundant exposed active sites and high oxidation resistance. The obtained electrocatalysts exhibited high electron conductivity and electrochemical stability under HER conditions, showing a durability superior to commercial Pt/C and a similar activity. The Re nanoclusters on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (Re NCs@rGO) have remarkably small HER overpotentials and can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2). These findings demonstrate that Re NCs@rGO is a promising alternative to conventional Pt-group-metal catalysts for high-performance water splitting systems.

Unveiling the Impact of Fe Incorporation on Intrinsic Performance of Reconstructed Water Oxidation Electrocatalyst

N. Clament Sagaya Selvam et al.

Summary: The surface dynamics of precatalysts during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), especially under high current density, can lead to inconsistent performance. By incorporating Fe into the reconstruction of precatalysts, the resulting heterointerface structures enriched with high valence active sites significantly enhance OER activity and long-term stability. Density functional theory calculations show that Fe-incorporated electrocatalysts have optimal binding energies and reduced overpotential compared to Fe-undoped ones.
