Antibacterial studies of ZnO and silica capped manganese doped zinc sulphide nanostructures

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: Undoped and 1% manganese doped Zinc Sulphide quantum dots (ZnS and Zn0.99Mn0.01S QDs, respectively) were synthesized and encapsulated with Zinc Oxide and Silica to prepare nanostructures. Characterization techniques confirmed the crystal phase and particle size of the nanostructures. Material properties of the synthesized nanostructures were revealed through spectroscopic analysis. Antimicrobial assays showed the high antibacterial potential of the nanostructures, especially against E. coli. The antibacterial activity of the nanostructures was further improved by increasing the amount of Zinc Oxide or Silica.

Polydopamine/SiO2 Hybrid Structured Superamphiphobic Fabrics with Good Photothermal Behavior

Shiwei Miao et al.

Summary: This study reports a simple and effective method for constructing a self-cleaning photothermal superamphiphobic fabric. SiO2 nanoparticles were grown on the polydopamine-coated fabric surface, creating micro-nano rough structures. The surface of SiO2 was modified to decrease the fabric surface energy, resulting in superamphiphobicity. The modified fabric showed resistance to contamination by water, common beverages, and oil, as well as excellent mechanical robustness and harsh environmental stability. Additionally, the surface temperature of the fabric increased under simulated sunlight.

Improvement of mechanical strength and water repellency of Hanji (traditional Korean paper) through acetylation in supercritical CO2

Seungmok Shin et al.

Summary: This work proposes using supercritical CO2 as a reaction medium to enhance the water repellency of Hanji, a traditional Korean cellulose textile, while retaining its other properties. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves good surface hydrophobicity and improved tensile strength in a shorter time compared to classical liquid and gaseous processes. The study suggests that this method has great potential for the functionalization of cellulose-based textiles with a wide range of industrial applications.
