Potential-Driven Semiconductor-to-Metal Transition in Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Quan Zhang et al.

Summary: The potential-driven semiconductor-to-metal transition is investigated using the fixed-potential method (FPM) in monolayer TMDs. Unequal injection of electrons into the semiconducting and metallic phases simulates the phase transition process, while increasing the electrode potential decreases the kinetic barrier.

Macroscopic transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers with uniformly high optical quality

Qiuyang Li et al.

Summary: A method based on 1-dodecanol encapsulation and gold-tape-assisted exfoliation is developed for the synthesis of large-area and high-quality transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers. The encapsulated monolayers show uniform exciton energy, linewidth, and quantum yield over the whole area, and can be integrated with photonic crystal cavities to enhance light-matter coupling.

Crystal-Phase Engineering of Two-Dimensional Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering: A Perspective

Ce Liang et al.

Summary: This perspective introduces the promising role of two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and discusses their fundamental properties, crystal-phase configurations, and phase transition strategies. It emphasizes the importance of crystal phase in determining the SERS effect of TMDs and highlights recent advances in phase-engineering approaches for remarkable SERS performance. By addressing current challenges and future directions in improving the crystal-phase engineering of TMDs in SERS, new insights are provided for the design and synthesis of more promising TMD-based SERS substrates.

Light-induced hexatic state in a layered quantum material

Till Domroese et al.

Summary: The authors discovered a transient hexatic state during the laser-induced transformation between two charge-density wave (CDW) phases in the CDW material 1T-TaS2. The ability to control material properties using light holds great potential for future applications in energy conversion and information technology. Strongly correlated materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides allow for optical control of electronic phases, charge ordering, and interlayer correlations through photodoping.

Niclas S. Mueller et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the activation of anti-Stokes photoluminescence (PL) in WSe2 monolayers through plasmonic nano-cavities, with a near hundred-fold enhancement of the upconverted PL intensity. It also highlights the significance of precise nanoparticle geometry and shows the selective and reversible switching of upconverted PL via electrochemical gating.

Tip-Mediated Bandgap Tuning for Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Meng-Kai Lin et al.

Summary: Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides show tunability in electronic properties, with bandgap modulation possible through control of tunneling current. Monolayer PtTe2 exhibits a reversible semiconductor-to-metal transition at moderate tunneling current, attributed to its surface electronic structure coupling with the tunneling tip.

Multivalley Superconductivity in Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Dongdong Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the induced superconducting state with a record high critical temperature (approximately 6K) and the emergence of a nonlinear Hall effect in a high-quality monolayer WS2 under ion gate control. The nonlinearity is attributed to the population of Q valleys, which is suggested to be a prerequisite for developing superconductivity. This study provides insights into the spin textured Fermi surface of Ising superconductivity in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Electronic property modulation in two-dimensional lateral superlattices of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides

Hongshuai Zou et al.

Summary: Fabricating lateral heterostructures and superlattices in two-dimensional materials allows for precise modulation of their physical properties. This study used high-throughput first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic property modulation in 2D lateral superlattices of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The study reveals that these lateral superlattices exhibit type-II band alignment, wider bandgap tunability, larger carrier effective masses, and stronger electron-hole charge separation tendency compared to their random alloy counterparts.

Luminescence enhancement and Raman characterization of defects in WS2 monolayers treated with low-power N2 plasma

Andre do Nascimento Barbosa et al.

Summary: In this study, WS2 monolayers were treated with low-power N-2 plasma for different periods of time, and their properties were studied using various techniques. The results showed that short treatment times increased the photoluminescence signal, while longer exposure quenched it. Raman spectra indicated that the treatment did not cause significant changes in peak positions, and XPS revealed the presence of N impurities in the lattice.

Chiara Trovatello et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the possibility of achieving single-pass optical parametric amplification at the ultimate thickness limit using semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, bypassing phase-matching requirements and achieving ultrabroad amplification bandwidths. The amplification process is independent of the in-plane polarization of the signal and pump fields, paving the way for the development of atom-sized tunable sources of radiation with potential applications in nanophotonics and quantum information technology.
