Observation of long-range orbital transport and giant orbital torque

Hiroki Hayashi et al.

Summary: Modern spintronics relies on the generation of spin currents through spin-orbit coupling. The spin-current generation has been believed to be triggered by current-induced orbital dynamics, which governs the angular momentum transfer from the lattice to the electrons in solids. The fundamental role of the orbital response in the angular momentum dynamics suggests the importance of the orbital counterpart of spin currents: orbital currents. Here, we demonstrate the generation of giant orbital currents and uncover fundamental features of the orbital response.

Observation of nonlocal orbital transport and sign reversal of dampinglike torque in Nb/Ni and Ta/Ni bilayers

Sutapa Dutta et al.

Summary: By studying Nb/Ni and Ta/Ni bilayers, we find that the sign of the dampinglike torque varies with different material combinations and is dependent on the thickness of the ferromagnet. The orbital current generated from niobium and tantalum can be converted into spin current inside nickel, resulting in the generation of orbital torque.

Theory of magnetic spin and orbital Hall and Nernst effects in bulk ferromagnets

Leandro Salemi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the magnetic spin Hall effect (MSHE) in ferromagnetic materials Fe, Co, and Ni using ab initio calculations. The MSHE of Fe and Co is comparable to the conventional spin Hall effect (SHE), but the magnitude depends strongly on the electron lifetime and can have opposite signs. For Ni, the MSHE is smaller than the SHE, but still significant for spin-orbit torques. Additionally, the study explores the magnetic orbital Hall effect (MOHE) and thermal analogs of spin and orbital Nernst effects.

Giant orbital Hall effect and orbital-to-spin conversion in 3d, 5d, and 4f metallic heterostructures

Giacomo Sala et al.

Summary: The research provides a systematic study on the generation, transmission, and conversion of orbital currents in heterostructures comprising 3d, 5d, and 4f metals. The results show that Cr has a giant orbital Hall conductivity of the order of 5 x 10(5)[(h) over bar /2e] Omega(-1) m(-1), and Pt exhibits a strong orbital Hall effect in addition to the spin Hall effect. The introduction of 4f spacers can significantly modulate the interplay between orbital and spin currents.

Spin-orbit torque-induced magnetization switching in Pt/Co-Tb/Ta structures

Yunzhuo Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated spin-orbit torque (SOT) effect and magnetization switching in Pt/Co-Tb/Ta structures with various Co-Tb compositions. Results revealed a certain law for current-induced SOT effective fields in the structure, as well as low coercivity near the compensation composition enabling current-induced magnetization switching at a low threshold current density. Direct Kerr imaging verified two different current-induced switching mechanisms in the Pt/Co-Tb/Ta system.

Orbital torque in magnetic bilayers

Dongjoon Lee et al.

Summary: The orbital Hall effect describes the generation of the orbital current flowing in a perpendicular direction to an external electric field, analogous to the spin Hall effect. Through theory and experiment, the presence of the orbital Hall effect in heavy metals and its potential application in spintronic device technology have been confirmed and explored. This finding contributes to the understanding of spin-orbit-coupled phenomena and orbital engineering in material science.

Efficient conversion of orbital Hall current to spin current for spin-orbit torque switching

Soogil Lee et al.

Summary: The Spin Hall effect enables efficient control of magnetization, while the recent discovery of the orbital Hall effect reveals the potential for larger orbital current generation. However, a conversion process from orbital current to spin current is necessary to exert torque on a ferromagnet. By introducing rare-earth ferromagnet Gd or a Pt interfacial layer with strong spin-orbit coupling in Cr/ferromagnet structures, the orbital Hall torque can be greatly enhanced, allowing for more efficient magnetization control in spin-orbit-torque-based spintronic devices.

Field-free spin-orbit torque-induced switching of perpendicular magnetization in a ferrimagnetic layer with a vertical composition gradient

Zhenyi Zheng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates bias-field-free switching of perpendicular ferrimagnets through the use of vertical composition gradient, which induces intrinsic SOTs and gradient-driven DMI to break in-plane symmetry during the switching process. The research provides a novel strategy for designing efficient and compact SOT devices for perpendicular ferrimagnetic materials.

Maximizing spin-orbit torque generated by the spin Hall effect of Pt

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: Platinum, with its giant spin Hall conductivity and compatibility with CMOS circuits, has the potential to be an outstanding provider of spin-orbit torques; however, pure clean-limit Pt with low resistivity still provides a low damping-like spin-orbit torque efficiency, limiting its practical applications; the efficiency of spin-orbit torque in Pt-based magnetic heterostructures can be significantly improved by increasing the spin Hall ratio of Pt and the spin transmissivity of the interfaces.

Nonlocal Measurement as a Probe of the Spin Hall Effect in Topological Insulators

Gregory M. Stephen et al.

Summary: Topological insulators (TIs) show great promise for alternative computing device designs, particularly in spintronic devices where efficient conversion between spin and charge signals is crucial. Measurements of the spin Hall effect (SHE) on the topological insulator Bi2Te2.5Se0.5 show high spin Hall angles and spin lifetimes, allowing for quick diagnostics of spin properties without the need for multilevel devices.

Interplay between Spin-Orbit Torques and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interactions in Ferrimagnetic Amorphous Alloys

Yassine Quessab et al.

Summary: Ferrimagnetic thin films are preferred for low-power spintronic applications due to their low magnetization, small angular momentum, and fast spin dynamics. Pt/CoGd/(W or Ta) films enable more energy-efficient SOT magnetization switching compared to Pt/CoGd/Ir, with Pt/CoGd/W having the highest spin-Hall angle and efficiency.
