Logical-qubit operations in an error-detecting surface code

J. F. Marques et al.

Summary: Future fault-tolerant quantum computers will store and process quantum data in logical qubits. A suite of logical operations has been realized on a distance-2 surface code qubit built from seven physical qubits. Fault-tolerant variants show higher performance in various operations, marking a milestone in quantum error correction with higher-distance codes.

Realizing repeated quantum error correction in a distance-three surface code

Sebastian Krinner et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates quantum error correction using the surface code and implements protection of logical qubits using 17 physical qubits in a superconducting circuit. By repeatedly executing error-correction cycles, measuring and decoding error syndromes, and applying post-processing corrections, repeated, fast, and high-performance quantum error correction is achieved.

Calibrated Decoders for Experimental Quantum Error Correction

Edward H. Chen et al.

Summary: Arbitrarily long quantum computations require quantum memories that can be repeatedly measured without being corrupted. In this study, the researchers were able to preserve the state of a quantum memory by using flagged error events. Fast, midcircuit measurements and resets of the physical qubits were used to extract all error events. A perfect matching decoder was introduced for comparison with other error decoders, and it was calibrated using measurements containing up to size-four correlated events. The researchers observed logical errors per round that surpass the physical measurement error, demonstrating the potential for repeated logical measurements.

High-performance superconducting quantum processors via laser annealing of transmon qubits

Eric J. Zhang et al.

Summary: Scaling the number of qubits while maintaining high-fidelity quantum gates is a challenge in quantum computing. Laser annealing is used to selectively tune the frequency of transmon qubits in fixed-frequency architectures. Statistical analysis shows high precision and no measurable impact on qubit coherence. The tuned processor exhibits good gate error statistics, indicating potential for high-yield scaling beyond 1000 qubits.

Effects of laser-annealing on fixed-frequency superconducting qubits

Hyunseong Kim et al.

Summary: As superconducting quantum processors become more complex, it is necessary to develop techniques to overcome frequency crowding constraints. Laser-annealing, a recently developed method, offers an effective post-fabrication approach to adjust the frequency of superconducting qubits. This study presents an automated laser-annealing apparatus based on conventional microscopy components and demonstrates the preservation of highly coherent transmons. The researchers also investigate the change in defect features, particularly two-level system defects, after laser-annealing using noise spectroscopy.

Laser-annealing Josephson junctions for yielding scaled-up superconducting quantum processors

Jared B. Hertzberg et al.

Summary: This article presents a solution to the problem of frequency crowding in fixed-frequency qubit architectures, which can greatly improve the precision of setting qubit frequencies through systematic adjustments. Using statistical modeling, the probability of avoiding frequency collisions was calculated, highlighting the importance of post-fabrication tuning in finding workable lattices in quantum systems.
