In-situ study of microstructures and sulphides and machinability of Bi-bearing free-cutting steels

Nianfu Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the in-situ evolution of the morphology of heated microstructures and sulfides, and the machinability of Bi-bearing high S, low C free-cutting steels. The results show that Bi particles soften, melt, and vaporize during heating, causing extensive local expansion of austenite grains. Heat absorbed by small sulfides leads to their volume expansion and formation of larger sulfides, while heat absorbed by large sulfides causes enlargement in dependent spherical or ellipsoidal shapes. The addition of Bi particles enhances the machinability of the steel.

Effects of h-BN additives on tensile mechanical behavior of Fe matrix: A molecular dynamics study

Minggang Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of h-BN size, strain rate and tensile direction on the tensile mechanical properties of Fe matrix in the presence of h-BN inclusions was investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the presence of h-BN inclusions reduced the tensile mechanical properties of Fe due to the difference in elastic modulus between the inclusions and matrix as well as stress concentration near the interface. The study also revealed the crystal structure changes, dislocation length variations, and double-peak phenomenon in the stress-strain curve caused by the h-BN inclusions.

Morphological transformation of elongated MnS inclusions in non-quenched and tempered steel during isothermal heating

Jun-yu Liu et al.

Summary: Elongated MnS inclusions in rolled non-quenched and tempered steel tend to cause mechanical anisotropy of steel, and reveal mechanisms of morphological transformation during isothermal heating. The diffusion couple experiment clarifies that surface diffusion is the driving force for the transformation of MnS inclusions.

Effect of Bismuth and Telluride on the Inclusions of Sulfur Free-Cutting Steel

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the inclusions in sulfur-containing free-cutting steel are mainly chain, cluster, and a few dotted MnS, while the inclusions in sulfur-bismuth free-cutting steel are mainly point and a few dotted MnS. Most of the inclusions in bismuth-containing free-cutting steel are flake inclusions, and the class II MnS change into class III MnS, which improves the free-cutting property of steel and reduces anisotropy. In addition, the addition of tellurium leads to the appearance of MnS and MnTe complex inclusions of different shapes, such as heart, water drop, butterfly, etc., and the fusiform manganese sulfide becomes the main component of the steel. Both bismuth and tellurium have modification effects on MnS.

Thermal behavior of Bi-Ni core-shell nanoparticles with different Ni shell thicknesses: A molecular dynamics study

Yuanjun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulation method was used to investigate the thermal behavior of Bi-Ni core-shell nanoparticles with different coating layer thicknesses during consecutive heating. The results showed that the Ni shell had an inhibitory effect on the volatilization of the Bi core and this effect increased with the Ni shell thickness. The rupture temperature of the Ni shell increased with the increase of Ni shell thickness, and the Ni shell did not rupture when the Ni shell thickness was greater than 20 angstrom.

Effects of pressure on volatilisation of pure Bi nanoparticles and Bi-Fe core-shell nanoparticles during continuous heating: a molecular dynamics study

Yuanjun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of pressure on the volatilization of pure Bi nanoparticles and Bi-Fe core-shell nanoparticles during continuous heating were investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that the volatilization patterns of the two types of nanoparticles were different under different temperatures and pressures. Additionally, the Fe shell was found to effectively reduce the volatilization of Bi element.

Influence of temperature on the cutting performance of single-crystal beryllium: a molecular dynamics simulation investigation

Xianjun Kong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the cutting performance of beryllium at different temperatures using molecular dynamics simulations. The study shows that temperature increase leads to a decrease in tangential and normal forces, variation in friction coefficient, change in stress state, and alterations in material surface structure.

A modified embedded-atom method interatomic potential for bismuth

Henan Zhou et al.

Summary: A semi-empirical interatomic potential for bismuth based on the modified embedded-atom method (MEAM) has been developed, accurately reproducing physical properties and showing good agreement with experimental data and density functional theory calculations. This potential is useful for studying material and mechanical behaviors of pure bismuth under different conditions and lays the groundwork for developing potentials for bismuth alloys or compounds.
