Nanoarchitecture Manipulation by Polycondensation on KCl Crystals toward Crystalline Lamellar Carbon Nitride for Efficient H2O2 Photoproduction

Zhenchun Yang et al.

Summary: By incorporating K+ into ordered heptazine/triazine units through polycondensation of small molecules on the KCl crystal surface, a crystalline carbon nitride framework (CNK) with extended periodicity of stacking layers is formed, showing enhanced photon absorption and attenuated emissive decay of excitons. The CNK frameworks exhibit remarkable performance in the photocatalytic selective oxygen reduction reaction for hydrogen peroxide production, with a reaction rate of 26.7 mmol h-1 g-1 and a high apparent quantum yield of 25.0%, 23.5 times higher than the counterpart synthesized without KCl. This method is generally applicable to all precursors for carbon nitride synthesis.

Anti-defect Engineering of Crystalline g-C3N4 Nanostructures for Efficient In Situ H2O2 Production

Jiawei Chen et al.

Summary: The focus of this study is on-site small-scale production and sustainable consumption of H2O2, which can be achieved through photocatalysis technology using gC3N4 as a catalyst. The high number of defects in the g-C3N4 nanostructure significantly inhibit its catalytic activity, acting as recombination centers for photo-generated carriers. An anti-defect engineering strategy is proposed to tailor a highly crystalline g-C3N4 nanostructure for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production and wastewater remediation.

Carbon Nitrides with Grafted Dual-Functional Ligands as Electron Acceptors and Active Sites for Ultra-stable Photocatalytic H2O2 Production

Pengzhan Sha et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic production of H2O2 is a potential green route to a greener future. However, the productivity is limited by rapid electron-hole separation and low oxygen reduction activity. In this study, a series of carbon nitrides with covalently bonded dual-functional ligands were designed to enhance H2O2 production and stability. The best-performing carbon nitride showed a high production rate and excellent stability. Mechanistic studies revealed that H2O2 was produced through a 2e(-) oxygen reduction reaction route. The excellent photocatalytic performance was attributed to the dual-functional ligand.

Improved H2O2 photogeneration on Rb-doped-polymeric carbon nitride via enhanced O2 adsorption

Zehao Li et al.

Summary: By introducing Rb+ ions, the PCN photocatalyst was modified to have more edge active sites and improved hydrophilicity and O2 adsorption capacity, leading to a higher H2O2 yield. Experimental and theoretical results showed that CNR-0.5 followed a two-step single-electron O2 reduction reaction pathway in the H2O2 photogeneration reaction. CNR-0.5 exhibited excellent photocatalytic H2O2 production performance in a real water body, expanding the practical applications of PCN materials.

A metal-free photocatalyst for highly efficient hydrogen peroxide photoproduction in real seawater

Qingyao Wu et al.

Summary: Artificial photosynthesis of H2O2 from water and oxygen has attracted widespread interest, but most photocatalysts face salt-deactivation effects. In this study, a metal-free photocatalyst based on carbon dots was synthesized for H2O2 photoproduction in seawater, showing a significantly higher yield compared to pure polymers. In-depth analysis revealed the active sites and catalytic mechanism of this composite catalyst in seawater, providing a highly efficient and practical catalyst for H2O2 photoproduction.

Objective Findings on the K-Doped g-C3N4 Photocatalysts: The Presence and Influence of Organic Byproducts on K-Doped g-C3N4 Photocatalysis

Binyao Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the presence of organic byproducts in K-doped g-C3N4 synthesized by thermal condensation methods, which negatively impact the photocatalytic performance. Hot-water washing was found to be a relatively effective approach to remove the organic byproducts. The formation of organic byproducts was attributed to the insufficient thermal condensation caused by the presence of K salts in the precursor molecules.
