A numerical investigation of the transport process of density currents over steep slopes and its implications for subsea cable breaks

Sheng-De Tsai et al.

Summary: This study simulated the formation and transport processes of sediment-laden density currents induced by tropical cyclones using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes model, and validated the results with laboratory experiments. The model was then applied to the Gaoping Submarine Canyon, where cable breaks were recorded. The study found that the occurrence of density currents is determined by the local Richardson number and suggested considering environmental factors and inflow conditions for cable design.

On the occurrence of low concentration hyperpycnal river plumes in a small mountainous river-canyon system

Sheng-De Tsai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the mechanisms controlling the formation of hyperpycnal river plumes in small mountainous rivers. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and grain size distribution in the Gaoping River were obtained by field observations and used as the basis for numerical simulations. The simulation results showed that if the sediment grain size is smaller than 8 μm, most of the suspended sediment remains on the sea surface in a surface plume.

Hydrostatic vs. non-hydrostatic modelling of density currents developing two dimensionally on steep and mild slopes

Gaetano Porcile et al.

Summary: This study simulated numerically the salinity and turbidity currents developing on steep and mild slopes two dimensionally, using the Delft3D-Flow process-based model. The results showed that the non-hydrostatic solutions captured in detail the time-dependent stages of dense undercurrents, while the hydrostatic solutions predicted fairly well the steady state of the undercurrents.

Turbulence Processes Within Turbidity Currents

Mathew G. Wells et al.

Summary: Turbidity currents are density-driven flows that transport vast quantities of particulate material across lake and ocean floors, sometimes generated by slope failure. The dynamics of turbidity currents, including internal turbulent mixing and flow around channel bends, are influenced by internal density and velocity structure, as well as the Coriolis force. Understanding these processes is crucial for comprehending some of the largest sedimentary structures on Earth's surface.
