Shape effects on penetration of dynamically installed anchors in a transparent marine clay surrogate

Abdelaziz Ads et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of shape on the penetration of low-speed penetrators, such as anchors and projectiles, using a transparent surrogate material to simulate soft marine clay. Thirteen anchors with different geometric parameters were tested, and the deceleration and depth of burial were measured. The results demonstrate the influence of geometric properties on the behavior of the penetrators, and an equation is proposed to predict penetration depth based on soil and anchor properties.

Dynamic installation of torpedo anchors in slightly overconsolidated clay-overlaying-sand deposit

Yikang Wang et al.

Summary: This study uses large deformation finite element and coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (LDFE/CEL) analyses to investigate the dynamic installation of torpedo anchors in an overconsolidated clay-overlaying-sand deposit. Parametric analysis reveals the significant influence of upper clay layer thickness, anchor impact velocity, anchor submerged weight, soil properties, and anchor geometric dimensions on soil failure patterns and dynamic installation behavior. An empirical method for predicting anchor penetration depth in single and layered soil deposits is derived based on extensive modeling data, with potential engineering applications.

Numerical prediction of potential 3-dimensional seabed trench profiles considering complex motions of mooring line

Shengjie Rui et al.

Summary: To reduce risks in mooring systems, it is necessary to predict the shape of three-dimensional seabed trenches. This study proposes a three-dimensional mooring line-seabed dynamics model to consider lateral movement of the mooring line in the soil, and develops a seabed trenching model based on field data to simplify three-dimensional trench profiles. By combining these models, a novel method for predicting three-dimensional trench profiles is established, reducing risks in the operation of mooring systems.

Effective stress analysis of dynamically installed anchor installation in rate-dependent clay

K. Chang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a dynamic large deformation finite element approach to investigate the installation behaviour of dynamically installed anchors (DIAs) in clay. A proposed expression is used to estimate the final embedment depth of DIAs.

Inclined loading capacity of caisson anchor in South China Sea carbonate sand considering the seabed soil loss

Shengjie Rui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of seabed soil loss on the bearing capacity of caisson anchors in carbonate sand through centrifuge model tests. The results show that soil loss changes the failure mode of the anchor and reduces its capacity accordingly.

Experimental and theoretical investigations on fin configuration effects of dynamically installed anchors in clay

Yong Fu et al.

Summary: This study systematically examines the effects of fin length-width ratio, fin surface area, fin position, and fin shape on the embedment depth and time-dependent holding capacity of Dynamically Installed Anchors (DIAs) through experimental and theoretical approaches. It was found that DIA models with short-wide-rectangular fins at the rear achieve better performance in terms of embedment depth and holding capacity. The theoretical assessment of nine types of finned DIAs provides practical implications for the design of DIAs in practice.

Numerical model for suction caisson under axial cyclic loadings

Wenjie Zhou et al.

Summary: This study proposed a numerical model to investigate the response of suction caissons under axial cyclic loadings and validated the model through centrifuge tests. It was found that the threshold amplitude of cyclic tension loadings for suction caisson in typical fine sand seabed generally ranges between 0.4Pu_d and 0.5Pu_d. The contribution of differential pressure to the suction caisson capacity can reach up to about 20% for the stable state. The failure risk of suction caisson in permeable seabed will be obviously increased for low-frequency cyclic tension loadings.
