Pyrethroids contamination and health risk assessment in seafood collected from the coast of Shandong, China

Manni Wu et al.

Summary: This study provides the first data on pyrethroid residues in seafood in China. The residues of fenpropathrin, cypermethrin, and deltamethrin in seafood samples from coastal cities in Shandong Province ranged from not detected to 26.82 μg/kg, not detected to 19.18 μg/kg, and not detected to 15.56 μg/kg, respectively. The risk assessment using hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) approaches showed that the maximum values of both HQ (1.81 x 10-3) and HI (2.9 x 10-3) were below the threshold 1. The results suggest that the consumption of seafood containing these three main pyrethroids is unlikely to pose a health risk to the general population in Shandong. The uncertainty analysis highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of pyrethroid residues in seafood to ensure food safety.

Dietary exposure risk assessment of pyrethroids in fruits and vegetables: a national scale investigation

Qianqian Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated 1720 samples of primary fruits and vegetables collected around China to assess the health risk of eight pyrethroids (PYRs) for adults and children. The results showed that the hazard index (HI) for chronic and acute cumulative dietary exposure ranged from 0.004 to 0.200% and 11.85 to 99.19%, respectively. The nationwide investigation indicated that the cumulative assessments were not hazardous. However, attention should be paid to the acute intake of pear, grape, and lettuce. This study provides compelling evidence for the development of policies and regulations to improve food quality and safety.

The Complex Role of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Food Detoxification

Penka Petrova et al.

Summary: Toxic ingredients in food can cause serious food-related diseases. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are essential components of fermented foods and probiotics, and have a long history of safe use. They have been shown to counteract and destroy harmful toxins in food, as well as antagonize toxigenic producers. Based on comprehensive data, there is potential for developing new combinations of LAB as probiotic starters for food detoxification.

Lactobacillus plantarum T3 as an adsorbent of aflatoxin B1 effectively mitigates the toxic effects on mice

Meng Tian et al.

Summary: The study aimed to use lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to remove aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Lactobacillus plantarum T3 showed the highest removal rate of AFB1 and mainly removed it through cell adsorption. The LAB-AFB1 complex remained stable in the gastrointestinal environment. Additionally, oral intake of LAB improved fecal excretion of AFB1 and reduced its toxicity.

Summary: A large-scale field study in Southeast China revealed that pyrethroid residues were widely detected in both soil and water, with crop type and season significantly impacting the distribution of these residues. Crop type was found to have the largest influence on the variance of pyrethroid distribution, followed by seasonal differences, providing new insights for insecticide control and ecological safety in agricultural lands.

Human exposure to organochlorine, pyrethroid and neonicotinoid pesticides: Comparison between urban and semi-urban regions of India

Niharika Anand et al.

Summary: The study found that in India, urban areas are at higher risk of pesticide exposure compared to semi-urban agricultural regions. Pesticide concentrations in human milk samples were higher in urban Kolkata than in semi-urban Nadia, with infants in both regions exceeding the Tolerable Daily Intake for certain pesticides. This indicates a shift in pesticide usage patterns from organochlorines to pyrethroids in India.
