Does Spending More Always Ensure Higher Cooperation? An Analysis of Institutional Incentives on Heterogeneous Networks

Summary: Humans have developed machinery to create policies and incentives, but we are always looking to improve our institutions. Optimizing spending without sacrificing positive outcomes is important, especially with limited funding. We extended existing models to consider information availability, cost restraints, and complex network structures, and tested their robustness using stochastic social learning paradigms. Our findings demonstrate the complexity of designing effective investment policies in socially diverse populations.

By combining evolutionary game theory with marketing techniques, we can identify leaders and promoters to boost cooperation in climate dilemmas. Seeding a small fraction of institutional supporters at random network positions is as effective as seeding highly central players. The interaction network and imitation ties play a significant role in determining cooperation and institution prevalence.

Sustainability in tourism determined by an asymmetric game with mobility

Summary: Many countries rely on tourism for economic development, but over-tourism and environmental degradation pose challenges for sustainability. This study shows that sustainable tourism depends on the optimal balance between stakeholders' economic benefits and costs related to sustainability. Tourists' benefits and costs are comparatively less relevant. Allowing greater tourist mobility decreases cooperation and leads to faster polarization among stakeholders.

Institutional incentives for the evolution of committed cooperation: ensuring participation is as important as enhancing compliance

Summary: Both conventional wisdom and empirical evidence suggest that arranging a prior commitment or agreement before an interaction takes place enhances the chance of reaching mutual cooperation. Here, a mathematical model is developed to explore the evolutionarily stable strategies of participation and compliance with commitment. The study finds that rewarding commitment compliant behaviors better promotes cooperation than punishing non-compliant ones, and allocating part of the budget for rewarding participation significantly enhances overall cooperation. Additionally, mistakes in deciding to participate favor the evolutionary stability of commitment compliance and cooperation.
