Ship energy management system development and experimental evaluation utilizing marine loading cycles based on machine learning techniques

Nikolaos Planakis et al.

Summary: For the development of optimal and robust energy management systems for hybrid ship propulsion plants, it is important to simulate real-world conditions as closely as possible in experimental facilities. This study proposes a framework for the design and experimental evaluation of power-split control systems for ship propulsion. Machine learning is used to process ship operation data and identify 20 loading patterns, which are extracted as representative templates for the development and testing of the energy management system. A ship propulsion model with wave disturbance is utilized to simulate realistic loading scenarios. A predictive energy management system is presented, controlling a diesel engine and an electric motor/generator based on a strategy that minimizes fuel consumption and NOx emissions. Parametric simulations are performed to evaluate the trade-off between fuel consumption and NOx emissions reduction potential. Experimental results on a hybrid diesel-electric marine powertrain show reductions of 6% in fuel consumption and 8.5% in NOx emissions compared to the tested profile.

An Energy Consumption Approach to Estimate Air Emission Reductions in Container Shipping

Ernest Czermanski et al.

Summary: Container shipping is the largest emitter within the maritime shipping industry, prompting the implementation of measures such as MARPOL Annex VI and the energy consumption approach to estimate emissions. The energy consumption approach is valuable for ongoing estimation of emission reductions and filling data gaps, supporting early detection of environmental impacts and identification of potential areas for emission reductions in container shipping.

Development of a Fuel Consumption Prediction Model Based on Machine Learning Using Ship In-Service Data

Young-Rong Kim et al.

Summary: This paper presents models for predicting fuel consumption using in-service data collected from a 13,000 TEU class container ship, along with methods to select the proper input variables. Artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple linear regression (MLR) were applied to implement the prediction model, with ANN-based models showing the best prediction accuracy. Sensitivity analysis of draught under normal operating conditions indicated an optimal draught of 14.79 m, providing optimal fuel consumption efficiency.
