Exploring the design space of PV-plus-battery system configurations under evolving grid conditions

Anna H. Schleifer et al.

Summary: This study explores the evolution of the energy and capacity values of PV-plus-battery systems over time, finding that low-cost renewable energy technologies can increase the economic viability of these systems. The study also suggests that future system designs will focus on increasing battery power capacity to enhance energy value.

Catching the hydrogen train: economics-driven green hydrogen adoption potential in the United Arab Emirates

Krishiv Gandhi et al.

Summary: This paper quantifies the potential of green hydrogen in the United Arab Emirates and considers the impact of varying prices on the economics of green H-2 adoption. The findings suggest economic viability and rapid scale-up to large export-oriented production capacities, but additional interventions may be required to achieve decarbonization in alignment with the 2050 net-zero target if cost reductions slow or gas prices return to historical lows.

The role of concentrated solar power with thermal energy storage in least-cost highly reliable electricity systems fully powered by variable renewable energy

Kathleen M. Kennedy et al.

Summary: Policies in the US are calling for the use of variable renewable energy sources that can reliably meet electricity demand despite fluctuations. However, the role of concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) in comparison to photovoltaics (PV) and batteries in a highly reliable, 100% renewable system has not been clearly evaluated. This study finds that CSP and PV do not directly compete, but TES competes with short-duration battery storage. The coupled CSP+TES system can provide reliability in the absence of other grid flexibility mechanisms, and its adoption is primarily limited by high CSP generation costs.

Assessing the performance of deep learning models for multivariate probabilistic energy forecasting

Aleksei Mashlakov et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the application of global deep learning models for multivariate energy forecasting in power systems, and evaluate their performance. The results suggest that global models perform better in short-term forecasts of heterogeneous datasets, but can be affected by hyperparameter sensitivity and hardware limitations as dataset dimensionality grows.

The design space for long-duration energy storage in decarbonized power systems

Nestor A. Sepulveda et al.

Summary: Wind and solar energy need to be supplemented by energy storage and firm generating capacity. Long-duration energy storage is seen as a potential solution to intermittency in renewable energy generation. The key parameters for the performance of energy storage are energy capacity cost and discharge efficiency. Storage systems with durations exceeding 100 hours have the greatest impact on electricity cost and firm generation.

The challenges of achieving a 100% renewable electricity system in the United States

Paul Denholm et al.

Summary: Understanding the technical and economic challenges of achieving 100% renewable energy electric power systems is crucial, as literature and real-world experience both point to the need to balance supply and demand economically and design reliable grids using inverter-based resources. Economic challenges arise due to nonlinear cost increases as systems near 100% renewable energy, while technical challenges may necessitate new inverter designs.

Quantifying the challenge of reaching a 100% renewable energy power system for the United States

Wesley J. Cole et al.

Summary: The study suggests that achieving 100% renewable energy in the contiguous United States may require slightly higher CO2 abatement costs, especially as the system approaches full renewable penetration. Additionally, sensitivity analysis under different conditions highlights the importance of considering various factors such as technology development, compliance requirements, and transmission availability.
