Simulation methodology for an off-grid solar-battery-water electrolyzer plant: Simultaneous optimization of component capacities and system control

Alejandro Ibanez-Rioja et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of component capacities on the viability and reliability of an off-grid water electrolyzer hydrogen production system. It proposes a novel method that simultaneously optimizes the component capacities and control of the system to minimize the cost of green hydrogen production. The results can be scaled by changing the nominal power of the electrolyzer. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis reveals that the price of the water electrolyzer has the greatest influence on the production cost of green hydrogen.

Levelized cost of hydrogen for refueling stations with solar PV and wind in Sweden: On-grid or off-grid?

Ou Tang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a model to identify the key cost components of renewable hydrogen for refueling stations, and simulates the performance using data from Swedish cities. It demonstrates the importance of integrating the electricity grid in green hydrogen production, with wind speed crucial in reducing costs. Additionally, a combination of solar and wind brings better performance in an off-grid scenario.

Dynamic energy and mass balance model for an industrial alkaline water electrolyzer plant process

Georgios Sakas et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a parameter adjustable dynamic mass and energy balance simulation model for an industrial alkaline water electrolyzer plant. The model enables cost and energy efficiency optimization and is based on mathematical models and white box coding. The accuracy of the model was verified using an analogous industrial plant, and it was found to be suitable for use in future plant optimization studies.

True Cost of Solar Hydrogen

Eero Vartiainen et al.

Summary: Green hydrogen will be a crucial component of the future 100% sustainable energy and industrial system, with a certain proportion of solar and wind electricity being used for hydrogen production through water electrolysis. It is anticipated that by 2030 and 2050, electrolyzer capital expenditure and hydrogen costs will significantly decrease, particularly with the continuous decline in solar PV costs.

Modeling alkaline water electrolysis for power-to-x applications: A scheduling approach

Christopher Varela et al.

Summary: A novel scheduling model for alkaline water electrolysis is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program, allowing for efficient reaction to different energy scenarios. The model enables finding the optimal number of electrolyzers and production schedules when dealing with large data sets of intermittent energy and electricity price, achieving a balance between hydrogen production, energy absorption, and operation costs.

Risk-Adjusted Discount Rate and Its Components for Onshore Wind Farms at the Feasibility Stage

Piotr W. Saluga et al.

Summary: The concept of risk is well understood in the energy sector, but quantifying risk can be difficult. Understanding the discount rate and its components is crucial for investment decisions, capital budgeting, and project management. This study analyzes the composition of the discount rate for onshore wind farm technologies in Polish conditions by referring to standard coal-fired power generation projects.

Technical feasibility evaluation of a solar PV based off-grid domestic energy system with battery and hydrogen energy storage in northern climates

Pietari Puranen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the technical feasibility of an off-grid energy system with short-term battery storage and seasonal hydrogen storage based on data from a residential house in Finland. The study finds that high peak electric power demand during low PV power generation times is the most significant factor affecting system dimensioning, with a battery storage capacity demand of only about 20 kWh. The study concludes that feasible solutions are available for an off-grid operation with a fuel cell and electrolyzer of certain nominal powers.
