The influence of sodium sulphate on sodium aluminosilicate solubility in Bayer liquor aiding the desilication process

Summary: The influence of Na2SO4 on chemical equilibrium in the NaOH-Al2O3-SiO2-Na2SO4-H2O system was investigated. Sodium aluminosilicate, also known as desilication product (DSP), was synthesized hydrothermally from kaolin. The experiments were conducted at different temperatures and Na2SO4 concentrations. The incorporation of SO42- into DSP followed Langmuir-type isotherms, with a maximum occupancy of 85%. Na2SO4 enhanced desilication by up to 80% compared to sulphate-free tests, with diminishing effect at higher SO42- concentrations. The presence of sulphate led to different transformation pathways and improved thermal stability of DSP.
