Asymmetrically Coordinated CoB1N3 Moieties for Selective Generation of High-Valence Co-Oxo Species via Coupled Electron-Proton Transfer in Fenton-like Reactions

Junsheng Song et al.

Summary: High-valence metal species generated in PMS-based Fenton-like processes offer selective degradation of contaminants in water, achieved by cleaving O-H and O-O bonds as well as efficient electron transfer. An asymmetrical configuration, characterized by a single cobalt atom coordinated with boron and nitrogen, facilitates the thermodynamically favorable cleavage of O-H bond, leading to the formation of Co(IV)(sic)O in a single-atom Co/PMS system and highly efficient removal of various organic pollutants. This strategy can be extended to other heteroatom doping systems, providing alternative pathways for specific reactive species conversion through atomic-level catalyst design for environmental applications.

Roles of MnO2 Colloids and Mn(III) during the Oxidation of Organic Contaminants by Permanganate

Shuchang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of MnO2 colloids and Mn(III) in the oxidation process of Mn(VII) with organic pollutants. The results show that the oxidation of phenolic contaminants by Mn(VII) exhibits an autoaccelerating trend, which is attributed to the oxidation of the organics by MnO2 colloids. The influence of pyrophosphate suggests that Mn(III) is also responsible for the autoaccelerating oxidation under specific conditions. The overall contribution of MnO2 colloids and Mn(III) ranges from 6.6% to 67.9% during the oxidation process.

Surface Al and Co coordination for peroxymonosulfate activation: Identification and mechanism

Min-Ping Zhu et al.

Summary: Deciphering the metal-support interaction in Fenton-like catalysis on millimeter-scaled catalysts is challenging but highly desirable. In this study, we fine-tune the support-surface reconstruction of Co2AlO4 on gamma-Al2O3 millispheres and reveal the origins of its activity in peroxymonosulfate activation. We find that the formation of Co2AlO4 with coordinated Co3+/Co2+ redox centers is regulated by the reconstructed tetrahedral and pentacoordinate Al3+ as binding sites, via strong metal-support interactions.

Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

John L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Efficient degradation of carbamazepine by electro-Fenton system without any extra oxidant in the presence of molybdate: The role of slow release of iron ions

Jiayi Li et al.

Summary: The efficiency of carbamazepine removal was significantly improved in an electro-Fenton system with the presence of sodium molybdate, which reduced iron sludge generation and promoted iron ion utilization. The slow release of iron ions in the system led to a much higher removal rate compared to sole electrolysis or other systems, with superoxide radical identified as the primary reactive species. This work elucidated the mechanism by which slow release of iron ions enhances pollutant degradation.
