Optimization of a Perovskite Oxide-Based Cathode Catalyst Layer on Performance of Direct Ammonia Fuel Cells

Georgina Jeerh et al.

Summary: To maximize fuel cell performance, a well-constructed microstructure in the catalyst layer (CL) is crucial for the effective transportation of electrons, ions, and reactants. In this study, a cathode CL for a direct ammonia fuel cell (DAFC) was designed and optimized using a perovskite oxide catalyst to reduce reliance on platinum group metals (PGMs). The results showed that the carbon, ionomer, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content in the cathode CLs (CCLs) had a significant impact on the performance of the DAFCs. By optimizing these components, the maximum current density and peak power density were substantially increased, highlighting the importance of an effective three-phase interface.

Pathways of ammonia electrooxidation on nickel hydroxide anodes and an alternative route towards recycled fertilizers

Jury J. Medvedev et al.

Summary: The anaerobic digestion (AD) of N-enriched waste streams combined with nutrient recovery from AD effluents is a cost-effective waste treatment technology for simultaneous production of biogas and recycled fertilizers. In this study, NH4NO3 fertilizers containing sulfur or phosphorus were efficiently synthesized through Ni(OH)(2)-catalyzed electrochemical oxidation of ammonia (AOR). Detailed mechanisms for the formation of major products and the role of NiOOH in the reaction were proposed.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of ammonia oxidation on the NiOOH surface was investigated, revealing that surfaces with hydroxide vacancies favored NH2-NH2 coupling, while surfaces with oxygen vacancies favored NH-NH coupling. Compared to Ni(OH)2 surface, NiOOH surface showed lower computed onset potentials.

A symmetric direct ammonia fuel cell using ternary NiCuFe alloy embedded in a carbon network as electrodes

Mengfei Zhang et al.

Summary: Recently, low-temperature direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs) have attracted extensive attention and played an important role in ammonia economy due to the high energy density of ammonia, low source-to-tank energy cost and carbon free fuel. However, the high cost of precious metal has hindered the large-scale application of DAFCs. In this study, a new bifunctional catalyst material Ni4Cu5Fex (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 5) embedded in a carbon network was prepared and showed superior activity and durability in ammonia oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions.

Ammonia as an effective hydrogen carrier and a clean fuel for solid oxide fuel cells

Zhijian Wan et al.

Summary: Ammonia is increasingly recognized as a clean fuel due to its zero-carbon characteristics and high hydrogen content. Research has shown that Ni-based catalysts are considered more cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to Ru-based catalysts for ammonia decomposition. Additionally, feeding SOFCs with pre-decomposed ammonia has been identified as a promising method to mitigate anode degradation and improve cell stability.

Summary: Ammonia has gained attention for carbon-neutral transportation, with gaseous ammonia being the ideal feedstock for DAFCs. However, gas-fed DAFCs face performance issues due to factors like anode humidity and operating temperature. The kinetics of the ammonia oxidation reaction in liquid-base-free media at DAFC relevant temperatures were studied, and a kinetic model was developed.

Enhancing the performance of direct urea fuel cells using Co dendrites

Enas Taha Sayed et al.

Summary: Mesoporous Co dendrites prepared by electroplating exhibit a high surface area and superior urea oxidation activity compared to Ni or Co nanoparticles prepared using chemical reduction. The Co dendrites show a lower onset potential and higher current output than Ni catalyst under experimental conditions, achieving a good output performance even at 20℃. These results demonstrate the potential of using nonprecious Co dendrites as anode and cathode catalysts in fuel cell applications.
