Construction of S-scheme heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic conversation of NO over dual-defect CeO2-x/g-C3N4-x

Haonan Han et al.

Summary: An increasing amount of nitric oxide (NOx), a harmful air pollutant, is being emitted into the atmosphere due to industrial development and fossil fuel combustion. Photocatalysis, a green and renewable technology, has gained attention as a potential solution to address this environmental pollution. In this study, a novel S-scheme CeO2-x/g-C3N4-x (Ce/CN) photocatalyst was synthesized to enhance the photocatalytic activity for NO removal under visible light irradiation. The results showed that the photocatalytic efficiency of 4Ce/CN was about 1.7 times higher than that of g-C3N4. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the N and O dual defects, the excellent conductivity of CeO2, and the in-built field of the Ce/CN S-scheme heterojunction.

Unraveling the dual defect sites in graphite carbon nitride for ultra-high photocatalytic H2O2 evolution

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Defect engineering modified graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with dual defect sites, -C N groups and N vacancies, has been found to significantly enhance the photocatalytic production of H2O2. The dual defect sites form an electron-rich structure and lead to a more localized charge density distribution, which improves light absorption, carrier separation, selectivity, and activity of H2O2 generation. The N vacancies effectively adsorb and activate O-2, while the -C N groups facilitate the adsorption of H+, synergistically promoting H2O2 generation. The modified g-C3N4 achieved a high H2O2 generation rate and apparent quantum efficiency, surpassing previously reported g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.

Lili Han et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts have shown enhanced catalytic properties, but most studies have focused on a limited number of metal combinations. In this research, a library of 37 different monometallic elements is synthesized, characterized, and analyzed to establish the largest reported single-atom catalyst library. Unified principles on the design of single-atom catalysts are uncovered, and the library is utilized to explore complex multimetallic phase spaces. The findings demonstrate that single-atom anchor sites can serve as structural units to assemble concentration-complex single-atom catalyst materials with multiple elements.

Carbon Nitride Photocatalysts with Integrated Oxidation and Reduction Atomic Active Centers for Improved CO2 Conversion

Honghui Ou et al.

Summary: Single-atom active-site catalysts have attracted significant attention in the field of photocatalytic CO2 conversion. However, designing active sites for CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation simultaneously on a photocatalyst and combining the corresponding half-reaction in a photocatalytic system is still difficult. In this study, a bimetallic single-atom active-site photocatalyst with two compatible active centers of Mn and Co was synthesized. The active center of Mn promotes H2O oxidation by accumulating photogenerated holes, while the active center of Co enhances CO2 activation by modifying the bond length and bond angle of CO2 molecules. The synthesized Mn1Co1/CN catalyst exhibited a significantly higher CO production rate compared to the corresponding single-metal active-site photocatalyst due to the synergistic effect of the atomic active centers.

Summary: This study demonstrates a new heteronuclear Mo-Se single atom electrocatalyst (MoSA-SeSA) that can efficiently reduce CO2 to CO with high Faradaic efficiency. Both experimental and theoretical results indicate that MoSA interacts directly with the ECR feedstock and intermediates, while SeSA modulates the electronic structure of MoSA through long-range electron delocalization, inhibiting MoSA poisoning caused by CO adsorption. In addition, SeSA located far from MoSA helps suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction and facilitate CO2 transport.
