Bi25FeO40/Bi2O2CO3 piezoelectric catalyst with built-in electric fields that was prepared via photochemical self-etching of Bi25FeO40 for 4-chlorophenol degradation

Tingjin Jiang et al.

Summary: Piezoelectric catalysis based on the polarization of piezoelectric materials has shown promising potential for environmental pollutant treatment. In this study, a unique strategy of photochemical self-etching was used to prepare a Bi25FeO40/Bi2O2CO3 piezoelectric catalyst. The catalyst exhibited excellent activity for the degradation of 4-chlorophenol under ultrasonic vibration, with a degradation efficiency of over 90% within 120 minutes. The introduction of Bi2O2CO3 significantly enhanced the piezoelectric catalytic activity of Bi25FeO40.

Adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid from water by pH-modulated Bronsted acid and base sites in mesoporous hafnium oxide ceramics

Fatima A. Hussain et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are increasingly found in drinking water globally. This research focuses on the adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using mesoporous hafnium oxide (MHO) ceramic. The experiments show that the adsorption capacity of PFOA by MHO is higher at lower pH values, and the solid MHO can be regenerated through calcination, reducing the amount of toxic solid waste.

Engineering of metal-MoS2 contacts to overcome Fermi level pinning

P. Khakbaz et al.

Summary: Using Density Functional Theory, this study investigated the Fermi level pinning in metal-MoS2 contacts and suggested a solution by manipulating the distance between the metal and MoS2 to achieve nearly zero Schottky barrier heights for specific metal-MoS2 stacks, essential for attaining Ohmic contacts with low series resistances.

Interfacial Schottky junctions modulated by photo-piezoelectric band bending to govern charge carrier migration for selective H2O2 generation

Kien Tiek Wong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interfacial charge transfer and selective H2O2 generation by manipulating electronic flows through deflexed band potentials on a polarized piezoelectric BiFO3 surface. The results show that by controlling the surface polarity of BiFO3, effective H2O2 accumulation can be achieved by coupling with the photocatalyst BiOCl/BiVO4, while restricting decomposition of H2O2. The study provides an effective strategy for selective H2O2 generation by regulating semiconductor surface junction through piezoelectric polarization.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Summary: This study investigates the role of defects in spinel LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 (LMNO) cathode materials and presents a method to manipulate structure-property relationships without traditional high-temperature annealing. LMNO samples from different precursors show varying defect levels and electrochemical performances. The findings suggest potential for developing high-performance high-voltage lithium-ion batteries using beta-MnO2-delta precursors.
