Precisely Tailoring Nitrogen Defects in Carbon Nitride for Efficient Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Qiqi Zhang et al.

Summary: Precisely tailoring the nitrogen defects is a promising approach for enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of C3N4. In this study, two-coordinated-N vacancies are selectively introduced into the C3N4 framework through a facile Cl- modification method, and the concentration of defects can be easily controlled by varying the usage of Cl- during thermal polymerization. The optimal defective C3N4 exhibits superior hydrogen and oxygen evolution rates and the highest apparent quantum efficiency among reported single-component C3N4 photocatalysts for overall water splitting. The Cl- modification facilitates the introduction of two-coordinated-N vacancies and promotes charge carrier separation efficiency, leading to greatly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency.

Summary: Synthesizing H2O2 through photocatalytic approach using a bipyridine-based covalent organic framework (COF-TfpBpy) shows high efficiency in small-scale production. The resulting H2O2 solution can degrade pollutants, and the photocatalytic activity is enhanced by the protonation of the bipyridine monomer. This work demonstrates the feasibility of COF-catalyzed photosynthesis of H2O2 from water and air, and provides a foundation for wastewater treatment using photocatalytic H2O2 solution.

Synergy of photocatalytic reduction and adsorption for boosting uranium removal with PMo12/UiO-66 heterojunction

Zhibin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this work, a new strategy for U(VI) removal using the PMo12/UiO-66 heterojunctions combining adsorption and photocatalytic reduction was proposed. The PMo12 was encapsulated in the cavities of UiO-66 using a one-step hydrothermal method, resulting in PMo12/UiO-66 with high adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity. The study showed that 15% PMo12/UiO-66 had a maximum theoretical sorption capacity of 225.36 mg/g for U(VI) and the photoreduction rate was about thirty times higher than that of UiO-66. Under light irradiation, the photogenerated electrons rapidly transferred from UiO-66 to PMo12, effectively reducing pre-enriched U(VI) to U(IV). This work provides new insights into the remediation of the radioactive environment.

Thiadiazole-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with a Donor-Acceptor Structure: Modulating Intermolecular Charge Transfer for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Typical Emerging Contaminants

Yanghui Hou et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have great potential as novel metal-free photocatalysts for decontaminating pollutants in water. This study demonstrates that intramolecular charge transfer within COFs can be modulated by constructing a donor-acceptor (D-A) structure, leading to improved photocatalytic performance. By integrating electron donor and acceptor units, two COFs (COF-TD1 and COF-TD2) were fabricated as visible-light-driven photocatalysts for degrading paracetamol. COF-TD1 exhibited superior photodegradation performance due to efficient electron-hole separation, and it could effectively degrade paracetamol even in complex water matrices. COF-TD1 also showed effective degradation of other emerging contaminants. The study provides an effective strategy for designing excellent COF-based photocatalysts.
