Promoting biomass electrooxidation via modulating proton and oxygen anion deintercalation in hydroxide

Zuyun He et al.

Summary: The redox center of transition metal oxides and hydroxides is typically considered to be the metal site, but recent research has shown that proton and oxygen also play an active role in catalytic reactions and determine the reactivity. In this study, the impact of proton and oxygen (de)intercalation processes on elementary steps in the glycerol electrooxidation reaction is systematically investigated. It is found that doping Co into Ni-hydroxide promotes the deintercalation of proton and oxygen anion from the catalyst surface. This leads to the formation of oxygen vacancies in NiCo hydroxide, which increase d-band filling on Co sites and facilitate charge transfer during the 2nd C-C bond cleavage. As a result, NiCo hydroxide exhibits enhanced glycerol electrooxidation activity.
