State-of-the-Art Review of Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane to Ethylene over MoVNbTeOx Catalysts

Yuxin Chen et al.

Summary: Ethylene is currently produced by steam cracking of naphtha or light alkanes, but this process has high energy demands, gas separation costs, and CO2 emissions. The oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) using MoVNbTeOx catalysts is a promising alternative due to its lower temperature operation and better economic viability. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the application of MoVNbTeOx catalysts in the ODHE process, covering their origin, catalyst treatment, material characterization, reaction mechanism, evaluation, and reactor design, contributing to the understanding and development of the ODHE process based on MoVNbTeOx catalysts.

Enhancement of ethylene production by alkali metal doping of MoVSb mixed oxide catalyst for ethane oxidative dehydrogenation

F. Ivras-Barcelo et al.

Summary: Hydrothermally prepared Mo-V-Sb mixed oxides doped with alkali metal cations (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, or Cs+) exhibit enhanced catalytic performance in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane compared to alkali metal-free MoVSbO catalysts. The selectivity to ethylene is maintained above 95% at up to 20% ethane conversion for all alkali metal promoted catalysts, with lower ethylene overoxidation observed at higher ethane conversion, depending on the alkali metal used. Among the catalysts, the K-doped MoVSbO catalyst shows the least susceptibility to both ethane total oxidation and ethylene overoxidation, achieving 90% selectivity to ethylene at ethane conversion higher than 65%.

Dual Ni active sites mediated by In to separate ethane activation and oxidation for enhanced ethene production via chemical looping scheme

Chaojie Wang et al.

Summary: Chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) provides an efficient way for the conversion of alkanes to alkenes. However, the challenge lies in the over-oxidation caused by the metal-oxo active sites, leading to low ethene yield. By incorporating main-group In into the catalyst, the selective oxidation of hydrogen instead of ethene was achieved, resulting in high ethene selectivity and long-term stability.

Regulation of friction pair to promote conversion of mechanical energy to chemical energy on Bi2WO6 and realization of enhanced tribocatalytic activity to degrade different pollutants

Meixuan Wu et al.

Summary: Recently, friction-induced tribocatalysis has attracted considerable attention for its ability to convert mechanical energy into chemical energy. However, its efficiency lags behind that of photocatalysis and piezocatalysis, and its environmental applications are mainly limited to dye degradation. In this study, a simple method was developed to enhance the tribocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6 by adding small amounts of polymer powders to form friction pairs. Among the polymers tested, PTFE exhibited the best performance as a counterpart to Bi2WO6. The optimized conditions for PTFE-promoted Bi2WO6 tribocatalysis were determined, and the enhanced performance was confirmed in the removal of various dyes and degradation of chlorophenols. The stability and durability of the catalyst were demonstrated through multiple uses, and the generation of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals was observed. A possible mechanism was proposed, and the degradation pathways of Rhodamine B and 2,4-Dichlorophenol during tribocatalysis were suggested based on intermediate detection.

Spectroscopic insights into the role of CO2 on the nature of Cr species in a CrOX/Al2O3 catalysts during ethane dehydrogenation with CO2

Gustavo do N. Franceschini et al.

Summary: The dehydrogenation of ethane with CO2 on CrOx/Al2O3 catalysts was studied, and the role of CO2 was investigated by comparing with ethane dehydrogenation without CO2. The characterization of the catalyst showed an intimate interaction between Cr and the support. In situ Raman spectroscopic analysis and oS studies revealed that the reaction conditions (presence/absence of CO2, and reaction temperature) influenced the nature of active Cr species and the reaction mechanism. At lower temperatures, CO2 promoted the oxidative dehydrogenation route, while at higher temperatures, the reaction occurred through catalytic dehydrogenation with partial inhibition of coke formation by CO2.

Thermogravimetric kinetic analysis of catalytic and non-catalytic pyrolysis of simulated municipal solid waste

Naif Raja et al.

Summary: Thermal pyrolysis of organic components in municipal solid waste (MSW) offers a scalable route to liquid fuels, but requires deep insight into thermochemistry and kinetics. This study investigates the (catalytic) pyrolysis of a model MSW feedstock using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and kinetic modeling. Catalytic pyrolysis is sensitive to the catalyst:feedstock mass ratio, and selecting the appropriate heating rate is crucial for catalyst selection and process optimization.

Role of cerium dopants in MoVNbO multi-metal oxide catalysts for selective oxidation of ethane

Baohua Liu et al.

Summary: The effect of Ce on the structure and performance of MoVNbCeO multi-metal oxide catalysts in the selective oxidation of ethane was studied. The introduction of Ce enhanced the oxidizability of the catalysts, increasing the V5+ content and promoting the ethane oxidation reaction. Ce also effectively facilitated oxygen adsorption, activation, and mobility, while stabilizing the catalyst structure. Catalysts with a moderate amount of Ce exhibited outstanding catalytic performance.

Summary: Simultaneous operando Raman and transmission FTIR spectroscopic measurements were used to study the structure-activity relationships of V-Zr-O catalysts during propane oxidative dehydrogenation. The combination of both spectroscopies allowed the identification of reaction intermediates and provided structural information about the catalyst. The results suggested a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism and showed higher activity of bridging oxygen sites than terminal V--O bonds.
