Ultrathin Cu-Fe oxide nanosheets boosting persulfate activation to remove organic pollutants with coupling and transformation between radical and nonradical mechanism

Mengxin Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the feasibility and mechanism of peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation by Cu-Fe bimetallic nanosheets. The novel Cu-Fe oxide nanosheets (CuFe-OS) exhibit regular crystal texture, multiple metal-oxygen bonds, and abundant oxygen vacancies, distinguishing them from Cu-Fe oxide. These features contribute to an increase in organic pollutant removal efficiency and degradation rate constant compared to Cu-Fe oxide. The coupling function of radical and nonradical pathways drives the activation process, with O-1(2) and O-center dot(2)- as the primary reactive oxygen species. Abundant oxygen vacancies benefit the generation of O-center dot(2)- and the conversion of metallic ions. The bimetallic synergy in CuFe-OS boosts reversible redox cycles. This work provides a novel strategy for wastewater remediation and deepens the understanding of coupled radical and nonradical mechanisms.

Xiaoxian Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of removing Microcystis aeruginosa by using ubiquitous natural pyrite to activate persulfate. The results showed that the reactive oxygen species generated during the activation process played a key role in facilitating the destabilization of algae cells and the continuous formation of oxidation layers on pyrite surface favored coagulation. The study highlighted the dual role of iron species as both catalyst and coagulant for algae removal, demonstrating the high efficiency and cost-effectiveness of using pyrite/persulfate system.

Facile synthesis of oxygen vacancies enriched ZnFe2O4 for effective photocatalytic peroxodisulfate activation

Xinyu Wang et al.

Summary: Water pollution is a pressing global environmental issue that requires immediate attention. Visible light-assisted catalytic peroxodisulfate (PDS) activation is an efficient advanced oxidation technology that holds great potential for treating organic wastewater. In this study, defects were introduced in ZnFe2O4 to create abundant oxygen vacancies (ZFO(v)), which not only enhanced the photocatalytic degradation of TCH, but also improved the activation of magnetic nanoparticles by PDS. The results showed that the ZFO(v)/PDS/vis system achieved a degradation rate of about 65% for TCH within 30 minutes, which was 1.23 times higher than that of the ZFO/PDS/vis system. Moreover, the degradation rate remained over 58% even after three reuse cycles, with minimal leaching of zinc and iron. The effects of pH, PDS concentration, humic acid, anions, and cations on TCH degradation in the presence of the ZFO(v)/PDS/vis system were also investigated. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of surface engineering and PDS activation for designing highly efficient photocatalysts.

Optical and photocatalytic characteristics of Se-doped h-boron nitride: Experimental assessments and DFT calculations

Xinyu Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, Se-doped h-BN photocatalysts with varied Se doping levels were developed via a heat treatment method. It was found that the band gap and interlayer spacing of h-BN can be decreased by incorporating Se, which resulted in enhanced photocatalytic properties. Among the modified samples, the optimized 2Se-BN showed the highest photocatalytic degradation rate under simulated solar irradiation and exhibited reliable recycling photocatalytic activity. Experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that the introduction of Se effectively narrowed the band gap of h-BN, thereby enhancing light harvesting ability and promoting charge carrier separation.

Simultaneous removal of algae, microcystins and disinfection byproduct precursors by peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-enhanced Fe(III) coagulation

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to enhance Fe(III) coagulation for the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa in water treatment. Results show that the presence of PMS promotes the formation of larger floc, leading to improved removal of algae and turbidity compared to conventional Fe(III) coagulation. The PMS-enhanced Fe(III) coagulation process also effectively degrades Microcystin-LR, a cyanotoxin, and reduces the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and their associated toxicity during subsequent chlorination.

A innovative stepwise strategy using magnetic Fe3O4-co-graft tannin/ polyethyleneimine composites in a coupled process of sulfate radical-advanced oxidation processes to control harmful algal blooms

Zijun Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel TP@Fe3O4 magnetic composite was used in combination with magnetic flocculation and sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (S-AOPs) to efficiently remove Microcystis aeruginosa and algal organic matters. The TP@Fe3O4 showed a high positive charge, resulting in a high algae removal rate at a modest dosage. The system of PMS/TP@Fe3O4 successfully reduced the TP@Fe3O4 dosage and effectively degraded AOMs. Through UV/PMS oxidation, a significant removal of microcystin and DOC was achieved. This method provides a non-destructive approach to mitigate harmful algal blooms.
