Viable production of hydrogen and methane from polluted water using eco-friendly plasmonic Pd-TiO2 nanocomposites

Omar Mbrouk et al.

Summary: Solar-to-fuel conversion is a promising clean energy approach that has attracted the attention of researchers. The use of solar-driven photocatalysts, such as plasmonic nanoparticles, is crucial for producing valuable fuel gases like methane and hydrogen. In this study, orange peel extract was employed as a capping agent to combine titanium dioxide with Pd-plasmonic nanoparticles. The obtained plasmonic photocatalysts exhibited enhanced performance in capturing visible light and showed promising results in the production of combustible gases through photocatalytic reactions.

Two Cu-Based Phosphonate Metal-Organic Frameworks as Efficient Water-Splitting Photocatalysts

Pablo Salcedo-Abraira et al.

Summary: Two three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) called IEF-8 and IEF-9, based on the pyrene tetraphosphonate ligand and copper, have been successfully synthesized and characterized. These MOFs exhibit good thermal and chemical stability, as well as photoresponse suitable for photocatalysis. Specifically, IEF-8 showed higher catalytic efficiency than the benchmarked Ti carboxylate photocatalyst MIL-125-(Ti)-NH2, producing 1800 mu mol center dot g(-1) of hydrogen after 22 hours of UV-vis irradiation without any co-catalyst.

Constructing hollow porous Pd/H-TiO2 photocatalyst for highly selective photocatalytic oxidation of methane to methanol with O2

Xibo Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a unique hollow porous nanocage structure was prepared for Pd/ H-TiO2 catalysts to selectively convert methane into methanol under mild conditions with the reaction of O2. The obtained Pd/H-TiO2 exhibited a high methanol production rate of 4.5 mmol/g/h with a selectivity of up to 70% under optimized conditions, surpassing most reported values. The mechanism study revealed the significant role of ˙OH radicals produced by photogenerated holes in the activation of methane into ˙CH3 species, which were further oxidized into methanol by ˙O2 radicals formed by photogenerated electrons. The strong metal-support interaction and unique porous hollow structure effectively enhanced the catalytic activity. These findings provide guidance for the design of high-performance photocatalysts for the selective photocatalytic oxidation of methane.

Photocatalytic C-N coupling towards urea synthesis with a palladium-supported CeO2 catalyst

Shuyi Yang et al.

Summary: The conversion of N-2 and CO2 into urea through a photocatalytic C-N coupling reaction under ambient conditions is a novel green synthesis approach. Palladium-decorated CeO2 (Pd-CeO2) has been demonstrated to be an efficient photocatalyst for this reaction, yielding a high rate of urea production. The interface between Pd and CeO2 facilitates the capture and activation of CO2 and N-2, while also stabilizing the formation of key intermediates (*NCON). The inhibition of the endothermic *NNH intermediate improves the reaction selectivity and promotes the C-N coupling process.

Enhanced photoproduction of hydrogen on Pd/TiO2 prepared by mechanochemistry

Yufen Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a photocatalyst with highly dispersed Pd clusters onto TiO2 was successfully synthesized through one-step ball milling. The unique interaction between the Pd clusters and titania support was observed only in the ball-milled sample and disappeared after calcination treatment. This mechanochemical strategy provides a new pathway for stabilizing supported metal clusters on semiconductors.

Arif Naim Rosnizam et al.

Summary: Two N,O-bidentate ligands and their Pd(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. The crystal structure analysis revealed a square planar geometry with bis-bidentate coordination. The intercontact between complex units was analyzed using Hirshfeld surface analysis and electrostatic potentials maps. The antibacterial activity and catalytic efficiency of the compounds were evaluated.

Supported Pd nanoparticles on micro structured chitosan-MgAl layered double hydroxide hydrogel beads as a sustainable, effective, and recyclable nanocatalyst for Heck cross-coupling reactions

Huri Dilruba Guzel et al.

Summary: In this study, a heterogeneous nano-system with sustainable, green, highly effective, and easily recoverable properties was developed through deposition of palladium nanoparticles on chitosan-MgAl layered double hydroxide hydrogel beads (CS-MgAl LDH). The catalytic activity of Pd-CS-MgAl LDH was explored in Heck cross coupling reaction, and it was found to be an effective and useful nanocatalyst which can couple different aryl halides with high yields. The Pd-CS-MgAl LDH nano catalyst showed higher catalytic performance compared to other reported catalysts and displayed good recoverability and practical application potential.

Catalytic performance of palladium nanoparticles encapsulated within nitrogen-doped carbon during Heck reaction

Xiaoyan Pei et al.

Summary: The Confinement effect is an effective strategy for enhancing catalyst performance during reactions. Encapsulating palladium nanoparticles within a N-doped carbon layer resulted in lower reaction activation energy and higher catalytic activity compared to palladium nanoparticles attached to the external surface of the layer. The superior catalytic performance of Pd@N-C can be attributed to the spatial restriction effect of the cavity in the case of the former, leading to lower leaching and improved catalytic efficiency.
