Remote body condition scoring of Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) using uncrewed aerial vehicle derived morphometrics

Devon Viljoen et al.

Summary: This study presents a UAV-based body condition score that offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional methods of assessing the health and welfare of crocodiles. The score was derived from seven morphometric measures collected from rectified aerial imagery of farmed Nile crocodiles. The results showed that a body condition score of 3 was the most frequent among the crocodiles assessed.

Never smile at a crocodile: Gaping behaviour in the Nile crocodile at Ndumo Game Reserve, South Africa

Cormac Price et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence of gaping behavior in a wild population of Nile crocodiles and finds that it occurs when there are other crocodiles nearby and when temperatures do not necessitate thermoregulation. The study suggests that gaping could be used as a form of thermoregulation and intra-species communication.
