Manufacturing Process of Optically Transparent Ultrasound Transducer: A Review

Rayyan Manwar et al.

Summary: Ultrasound (US) transducer is a crucial component for hybrid or combination imaging modalities. However, conventional US transducers are opaque, limiting optical illumination and system performance. To overcome these drawbacks, optically transparent ultrasound transducers (TUTs) have been explored, including piezoelectric and microelectromechanical system-based capacitive and piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers. This article compares the materials and fabrication process used to make different types of TUT.

Influence of ultrasonic vibrations during drilling of carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetherimide composites

Abhinav Shard et al.

Summary: Carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetherimide (CFRP) is an advanced composite material with excellent properties, but drilling it is challenging due to its complex structure. This study shows that rotary ultrasonic-assisted drilling can effectively reduce cutting force, surface roughness, and torque in CFRP composites. The use of diamond-impregnated hollow tools in this drilling process can minimize microcracks and fiber delamination, making it suitable for various industrial applications. Overall, rotary ultrasonic-assisted drilling is a promising technique for CFRP composite machining. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Influence of cutting force on temperature, microcracks and chip morphology during rotary ultrasonic bone drilling: An in-vitro study

Raj Agarwal et al.

Summary: Mechanical and thermal damage during bone drilling can cause implant failure. High cutting force and temperature above 47 degrees C can lead to bone cell death and microcracks, affecting implant stability. A study comparing conventional bone drilling (CBD) and rotary ultrasonic bone drilling (RUBD) found that RUBD reduces cutting force, temperature rise, microcracks, and bone chip accumulation as compared to CBD.

Prediction of surface roughness and cutting force induced during rotary ultrasonic bone drilling via statistical and machine learning algorithms

Raj Agarwal et al.

Summary: The ultrasonic-assisted drilling of bone is gaining attention in orthopedic research and applications. This study used different machine learning models to predict the cutting force and surface roughness induced by bone drilling, and compared them with statistical analysis. The results showed that ridge regression had the smallest error metrics for surface roughness prediction, while support vector regression was the most accurate model for predicting cutting force. Machine learning algorithms are preferable for predicting these parameters during bone drilling compared to statistical analysis.

Effect of Drilling Techniques on Microcracks and Pull-Out Strength of Cortical Screw Fixed in Human Tibia: An In-Vitro Study

Ravinder Pal Singh et al.

Summary: The strength between cortical screw and bone is crucial for the success of orthopaedic implant surgery. Excessive cutting force during drilling can lead to microcracks in bone surface and loosening of the implant. Research shows that using rotary ultrasonic bone drilling (RUBD) produces less cutting force and thinner microcracks compared to conventional surgical bone drilling (CSBD), leading to significantly higher pull-out strength of screws in human tibia.
