The Early Operative Burden for Children Born with Cleft lip and Palate

Teagan Fink et al.

Summary: This study aimed to audit the surgical management of infants born with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (CLP) at an Australian cleft unit. The results showed that 193 infants underwent different surgical repair techniques with few postoperative complications. The rates of oronasal fistula surgery and velopharyngeal insufficiency surgery were similar across the surgical repair groups and comparable to international Cleft centers. Children underwent an average of four operative procedures, including primary Cleft repair, ear, nose and throat surgery, and dental care. The most common postoperative intervention was surgery for managing Eustachian tube dysfunction.
