Pricing decisions in a dual supply chain of organic and conventional agricultural products

Yael Perlman et al.

Summary: This study analyzes a dual-channel supply chain model with two suppliers offering organic and conventional agricultural products. The research considers heterogeneity in consumer valuations and product value depreciation. Through analytical and numerical analysis, the study reveals the pricing relationships and profit conditions among the supply chain members.

Exact and heuristic methods to solve a bi-objective problem of sustainable cultivation

Angelo Aliano Filho et al.

Summary: This work proposes a binary nonlinear bi-objective optimization model for planning the sustainable cultivation of crops. Exact methods and a metaheuristic approach were proposed and tested, showing their effectiveness in finding high-quality solutions for small and medium size instances. The proposed mathematical models and methods provide a powerful methodology for this complex decision-making problem.

The implications of crop minimum support price in the presence of myopic and strategic farmers

Prashant Chintapalli et al.

Summary: This paper examines the implications of credit-based MSPs in a more general setting, involving two types of farmers and two types of crops. The study finds that strategic farmers can counteract the decisions of myopic farmers and that credit-based MSPs are more effective when the market is dominated by myopic farmers. Additionally, offering MSPs to complementary crops can result in a higher surplus.

Crop minimum support price versus cost subsidy: Farmer and consumer welfare

Prashant Chintapalli et al.

Summary: Many developing countries use minimum support price (MSP) as an alternative subsidy scheme to safeguard farmers' incomes and ensure sufficient crop production. Both MSP and cost subsidy can increase production and improve consumer surplus, but cost subsidy may decrease farmer's surplus unexpectedly.

Government subsidy policy for green and efficient raw materials considering farmer heterogeneity

Xiaolong Guo et al.

Summary: In order to protect soil quality and increase farmers' incomes, agricultural firms have developed green and efficient raw materials (GRMs) that can improve crop yields and reduce soil damage. However, farmers' trust in agricultural information and sustainable development attitudes vary, leading to an underestimation of the value of GRMs. This paper explores the optimal subsidy policy of the government to promote GRMs, taking into account farmer heterogeneity. The analysis suggests that the government should subsidize both farmers and the GRM firm when the effectiveness of GRMs is not high enough. However, if the effectiveness is sufficient, it is more effective to only subsidize farmers. This subsidy policy can lead to a win-win-win outcome for farmers, the GRM firm, and social welfare under certain conditions.

Information Provision and Farmer Welfare in Developing Economies

Junjie Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper examines the dissemination of market information to farmers in developing countries and finds that providing information to all farmers may not always benefit them. The optimal information provision policy depends on the competition type, yield uncertainty, source of funding, and the social planner's ultimate goal.

Subsidize farmers or bioenergy producer? The design of a government subsidy program for a bioenergy supply chain

Fei Ye et al.

Summary: The success of the bioenergy industry relies on a sufficient supply of biomass feedstocks, which can be facilitated by government subsidy programs for farmers and bioenergy producers. Research shows that both types of subsidies are effective under certain conditions, with the optimal program depending on budget constraints and land capacity limitations. Interestingly, the study finds that bioenergy producer subsidy programs tend to benefit farmers more, while farmer subsidy programs are better at mitigating risk in high yield uncertainty scenarios.

Financing an Agricultural Supply Chain with a Capital-Constrained Smallholder Farmer in Developing Economies

Zelong Yi et al.

Summary: In an agricultural supply chain, the use of guarantor and direct financing by an intermediary platform can increase the production level of smallholder farmers. The platform will encourage different financing options based on cost and commission fees. The involvement of the intermediary platform significantly improves the welfare of the farmer and the total profit of the supply chain, and increased social responsibility can lead to a win-win-win outcome for all parties involved.

The Impact of Contract Farming on Agricultural Product Supply in Developing Economies

Jiguang Chen et al.

Summary: Contract farming has positive impacts on farmers, buyers, and the overall supply chain, improving farmers' income and helping alleviate poverty. Additionally, the cost of producing HVA is a crucial factor that can either widen or narrow the income disparity between contract and non-contract farmers.

An Economic Analysis of Agricultural Support Prices in Developing Economies

Harish Guda et al.

Summary: The guaranteed support price (GSP) scheme aims to support farmers and the underprivileged population in developing countries through supply-side incentives, demand-side provisioning, and food security measures. Analyzing the scheme against direct benefit transfer (DBT), it is found that the surplus under GSP is higher when the value of food security is significant, while the production by farmers is influenced by the poverty level of consumers and yield uncertainty. When poverty is extreme, GSP and DBT result in similar production levels, but if yield uncertainty is high, GSP can strategically induce higher production compared to DBT.

The Value and Cost of Crop Minimum Support Price: Farmer and Consumer Welfare and Implementation Cost

Prashant Chintapalli et al.

Summary: Crop minimum support price (MSP) is an important subsidy program in developing countries, aiming to improve farmer welfare and safeguard consumer surplus. The effectiveness of MSP depends on the implementation cost, market uncertainties, and production risks in agriculture.
