These competencies align with the latest developments in women's health and recognize the changing context of patients' lives, establishing the role of general internal medicine physicians in providing comprehensive care to women and gender-diverse individuals.

Levonorgestrel vs. Copper Intrauterine Devices for Emergency Contraception

Summary: In the United States, more women choose levonorgestrel IUDs over copper IUDs for long-term contraception. This study found that the levonorgestrel IUD is noninferior to the copper IUD for emergency contraception. Adverse events were similar between the two groups.

Contraceptive Procedures in Internal Medicine Clinics and Resident Education: a Qualitative Study of Implementation Methods, Barriers, and Facilitators

Summary: This study examines the approaches, facilitators, and barriers reported by internal medicine faculty to incorporating long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) into their practices and residency training. Results show that LARCs were integrated into internal medicine clinics in various models, with the balance between clinical and educational priorities being a common theme. The success of integrating LARCs depended on support from multiple stakeholders, including patients, residents, leadership, and other departments.
