False alarms and information transmission in grouping animals

Leah Gray et al.

Summary: Grouping in prey species provides access to social information, such as predator presence, enhancing their ability to avoid capture. However, false alarms are common and costly in terms of energy and opportunity costs. This review focuses on the factors influencing false alarms in two stages: individual perception and response, and group processing of predator information.
