The Potential of Bison Restoration as an Ecological Approach to Future Tribal Food Sovereignty on the Northern Great Plains

Hila Shamon et al.

Summary: Future climate projections suggest that traditional agricultural practices in the Northern Great Plains will become less sustainable due to warming, drying, and increased weather variability. This will especially impact Native American communities and their livelihoods. Restoring North American Plains bison to tribal lands could provide ecological and socio-economic benefits to underserved communities and improve their resilience to a changing climate.

Establishment of a Wisent (Bison bonasus) Germplasm Bank

Anna Maria Duszewska et al.

Summary: The research aimed to improve the protection and preservation strategy of the European bison through the establishment of a wisent germplasm bank using reproductive biotechnologies. It successfully obtained wisent embryos and created a wisent embryo bank through procedures such as in vitro maturation of oocytes, in vitro fertilization, embryo culture, and cryopreservation.

The influence of Percoll® density gradient centrifugation before cryopreservation on the quality of frozen wisent (Bison bonasus) epididymal spermatozoa

Maria Eberhardt et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the ability of Percoll(R) density gradient centrifugation to improve the quality of wisent spermatozoa after cryopreservation. The results showed that this method can increase the percentage of motile spermatozoa, improve the proportion of spermatozoa with normal morphology and proper functionality, but also result in a reduction of the total number of gametes.

Influence of ovarian follicular wave synchronization and single-dose eCG superstimulation on oocyte collection and in vitro embryo production in bison during the ovulatory and anovulatory seasons

Miranda L. Zwiefelhofer et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop an effective, minimum-handling protocol for the conservation of wood bison. The findings showed that ovarian superstimulation after follicular wave synchronization increased the number of >8 mm follicles, COC collection, and embryo production. Repeated ovarian superstimulation resulted in similar follicular counts and embryo production rates within individuals. Additionally, the highest yield of follicles aspirated, COC collected, and embryos produced was during the anovulatory season.

Reintroducing bison results in long-running and resilient increases in grassland diversity

Summary: The extinction of megafauna may have had a destabilizing impact on ecosystems and global biodiversity. A study found that reintroducing native herbivores, such as the plains bison, into grasslands can significantly increase native plant species richness.

Summary: The research demonstrated that live offspring can be generated from oocytes collected from Yellowstone National Park bison post mortem in the non-breeding season, and that gamete recovery can be a valuable tool for conserving valuable genetics and mitigating disease impacts.
