A Review of Generalizability and Transportability

Irina Degtiar et al.

Summary: When assessing causal effects, determining the target population is crucial. Randomized studies may have internal validity but may not represent the target population. Observational studies may better reflect the target population but are subject to bias. Both internal and external validity are necessary for unbiased estimates.

Saddle versus non-saddle pulmonary embolism: differences in the clinical, echocardiographic, and outcome characteristics

Wanis H. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: The central location, size, and instability of saddle PE have significant effects on its hemodynamic consequences and management approach. This study found that patients with saddle PE presented more frequently with tachycardia and tachypnea, required more ICU admissions and thrombolysis/thrombectomy use, and were at higher risk of developing decompensation and cardiac arrest after their initial admission. Echocardiographic findings showed that saddle PE was associated with higher rates of RV enlargement, RV dysfunction, and RVSP > 40 mmHg. The use of oral contraceptive pills, RVSP > 40 mmHg, and development of hypotension and decompensation following admission were significant predictors of saddle PE.

Prognostic significance of symptomatic deep vein thrombosis in patients with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism regarding the European Society of Cardiology mortality risk model

Slobodan D. Obradovic et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with symptomatic DVT in acute PE had lower all-cause hospital mortality compared to patients without DVT symptoms or signs, particularly in the intermediate-high risk subgroup. Thrombolysis treatment for these patients may lead to even lower hospital mortality rates.

Incidence of Venous Thromboembolism in a Racially Diverse Population of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma

Summary: The study on VTE incidence and mortality rates in Oklahoma County showed significant variations by race, indicating the importance of considering racial disparities in public health strategies targeting VTE prevention and treatment.

Impact of no, distal, and proximal deep vein thrombosis on clinical outcomes in patients with acute pulmonary embolism: From the COMMAND VTE registry

Shushi Nishiwaki et al.

Summary: The study revealed that acute PE patients with concomitant proximal DVT have a higher short-term mortality risk compared to those without DVT, while the risk for short-term mortality is not significantly different between distal DVT patients and patients without DVT.
