Cooperative Initiation in a Dinuclear Indium Complex for CO2 Epoxide Copolymerization

Hyuk-Joon Jung et al.

Summary: Dinuclear indium complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The neutral indium chloride complex [(ONapNiN)InCl2]2 (4) showed high conversion and selectivity for the alternating copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and CO2. The reactivity of the dinuclear indium chloride complex 4 differs significantly from that of the mononuclear indium chloride complex 5, suggesting a cooperative initiation mechanism involving the two indium centers in 4.

Summary: This study investigates the use of modified tertiary and quaternary phosphonium borane catalysts for CO2/epoxide copolymerization. The catalysts were analyzed using in situ Raman spectroscopy and a nonisothermal kinetic technique to evaluate their performance. The results showed that the substitution of phosphonium/borane groups and the tether length significantly affected the polymerization rates. Additionally, the tertiary phosphonium catalysts maintained high activity in the presence of excess di-alcohols.

Multifunctional Catalysts for Ring-Opening Copolymerizations

Claire A. L. Lidston et al.

Summary: The ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of epoxides with CO2 or cyclic anhydrides using multifunctional catalysts has been explored as a versatile route for synthesizing a wide range of polycarbonate and polyester copolymers. Covalently tethering the Lewis acid catalyst and cocatalyst together has been shown to increase both catalyst activity and selectivity in epoxide ROCOP. This review examines the development of multifunctional catalysts for copolymerization of epoxides with CO2, cyclic anhydrides, carbonyl sulfide (COS), and cyclic thioanhydrides, and evaluates how the mechanisms of these catalysts lead to improved activity and selectivity in ROCOP.

Borinane-based organoboron catalysts for alternating copolymerization of CO2 with cyclic ethers: improved productivity and facile recovery

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: This research describes the design and synthesis of organoboron catalysts for the alternating ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of CO2 with cyclic ethers. The performance of these catalysts was assessed by considering various parameters, such as the type of boron center, the distance between the boron center and the ammonium cation, and the size of the substituents of the cation. Among all the boron-based catalysts, borinane-based catalyst 5 showed the highest productivity in the copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides. Additionally, catalyst 5 could be easily recycled and used as a difunctional initiator. Density Functional Theory computation provided insights into the mechanism of the bifunctional catalyst-mediated CO2 copolymerization and highlighted the importance of the type of boron centers in the overall performance.
