Electron-Transporting Conjugated Polymers from Novel Aromatic Five-Membered Diimides: Naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b?]-dithiophene and-Diselenophene Diimides

Lingli Zhao et al.

Summary: Two novel aromatic five-membered diimide (AFMDI) units were created using a UV-photocyclization protocol, and were successfully applied in the construction of conjugated copolymers. The resulting polymers exhibited a highly conjugated backbone, high electron deficiency, and low band gaps, making them promising candidates for n-type charge transport in all-polymer solar cells.

Flattened 1D fragments of fullerene C60 that exhibit robustness toward multi-electron reduction

Masahiro Hayakawa et al.

Summary: Fullerenes are highly robust materials with exceptional multi-electron reduction abilities. Scientists have identified several structural factors that contribute to this electron affinity, including high symmetry, pyramidalized carbon atoms, and five-membered ring substructures. In this study, the role of the five-membered ring substructures was investigated through the synthesis of oligo(biindenylidene)s, one-dimensional fragments of fullerene C-60. It was found that these oligomers can accept electrons up to the number of five-membered rings in their main chains, highlighting the importance of the pentagonal substructure for stability towards multi-electron reduction. Additionally, the oligo(biindenylidene)s exhibited enhanced absorption across the visible region compared to C-60, indicating their potential as electron-accepting materials in molecular design.

High n-type and p-type conductivities and power factors achieved in a single conjugated polymer

Zi-Di Yu et al.

Summary: The charge transport properties of conjugated polymers are often limited by energetic disorder. Recently, amorphous conjugated polymers with planar backbone conformations and low energetic disorder have been investigated. However, there is a lack of strategy to finely tune the interchain Tr-Tr contacts of these polymers. In this study, excellent conductivity and thermoelectric performance were achieved in polymers based on thiophene-fused benzodifurandione oligo(p-phenylene-vinylene) by reducing the crystallization rate of side chains and controlling the degree of interchain pi-pi contacts.

Jingjing Wen et al.

Summary: A facile strategy involving palladium-catalyzed C-H activation and unexpected 1,2-sulfur migration was used to prepare libraries of oligothienoacene diimides with anti- and syn-isomers, leading to the synthesis of series of oligothienoacene diimides with 6, 8, and 10 fused rings. These materials showed significant potential for organic electronic devices, with the syn-isomer demonstrating electron mobilities up to 4.2 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in single-crystal microfibers.

Kui Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of novel acceptor building blocks, CNI, CNTI, and CNDTI, were successfully developed by introducing strong electron-withdrawing cyano functionality on BTI and its derivatives. Based on these novel building blocks, high-performance n-type polymers with deep-positioned LUMOs were synthesized, showing excellent stability and doping efficiency. These polymers exhibit the highest electrical conductivity of 23.3 S m-1 and a power factor of up to 10 mu W m-1 K-2, which are among the highest values reported for solution-processed molecularly n-doped polymers.

Thiadiazoloquinoxaline-Fused Acenaphthenequinone imide: A Highly Electron-Withdrawing Acceptor for Ambipolar Semiconducting Polymers with Strong Near-Infrared Absorption

Jiayi Yang et al.

Summary: The newly reported heterocyclic imide, thiadiazolo[3,4-g]-quinoxaline-fused acenaphthenequinone imide acceptor (TQAI), designed in this study exhibits strong electron affinity, largely pi-extended pi-conjugated structure, and preferred solid-state organization, leading to desirable photophysical and electrochemical properties in conjugated polymers. The use of TQAI acceptor and thiophene-derivative donor segments in polymer main chain results in deep LUMO levels, narrow optical band gaps, and ambipolar charge transport in organic field-effect transistors, showcasing potential for optoelectronic applications.
